iPhone 10 settings. Specifications of the iPhone X smartphone. The radio of the mobile device is a built-in FM receiver

So, the day has come: the iPhone X, the brightest, sensational and long-awaited flagship of the year, has arrived for testing. Many criticized Apple and Tim Cook for the decision to release the iPhone 8/8 Plus first and only then the iPhone X. There was also a lot of talk that Apple did not have time to produce the required number of “tens” on time. The latter is partly true: the shortage of iPhone X will continue at least until the end of the calendar year. However, this shortage only confirms that Apple is still "on horseback" and can still produce sensational products. About how much the iPhone X deserves this status, we will tell you in our article.

Let's take a look at the characteristics of the novelty.

The main difference is, of course, the screen. Not only does the iPhone X have the largest and highest resolution, but for the first time in Apple smartphones, it is made using OLED technology. The second key innovation is the user identification system: instead of a fingerprint scanner, there is a TrueDepth face recognition camera. And lastly, despite the increase in display, this is the lightest of Apple's large smartphones. It is almost 30 grams lighter than the iPhone 8 Plus and 15 grams lighter than the iPhone 7 Plus. At the same time, Apple retained moisture protection and other characteristics.

Well, let's get acquainted with the smartphone live.

Packaging, Contents, and Folio Case

The iPhone X box is made in the traditional Apple style, but with one nuance: the image of the iPhone faces is applied with silver paint. A trifle - but it looks impressive (of course, this is not felt in the photo).

However, using a case with an iPhone X is a dubious idea, because you won't feel like you've upgraded to a new iPhone if you previously had an iPhone 7 Plus. Of course, the main innovation in terms of design is the glass back surface.

The bundle is no different from the iPhone of the previous two generations: a 5 V 1 A power supply, a Lightning cable, an adapter from Lightning to a mini-jack (3.5 mm), EarPods with a Lightning connector and a set of leaflets.

It would probably be logical to add something different - something that would be a nice bonus for the owners of a premium product. But alas. Even the new Folio case will have to be bought separately, and its cost, by the way, is rather big: 7490 rubles. However, the cover makes a really good impression.

It is made of soft genuine leather, very pleasant to the touch, with fine thread stitching. Inside, where the case meets the case, there is a microfiber padding. Folio protects your smartphone from all sides, including the screen. However, in addition to the protection and unlocking function, the closing flap also has a wallet function with two compartments: you can store cards (no more than 4-5), business cards, photos, etc.

In general, this is an amateur decision, especially because of the price, but we really liked the Folio case. Moreover, even in it, the new iPhone does not become bulky, and the frame around the screen is too wide. But this is the topic of the next section of our article.

Design

When you pick up the iPhone X, you experience a forgotten feeling that Apple smartphones have not pleased us for a long time. I want to exclaim: “Here it is, the future!” Indeed, the screen, almost evenly covering the entire frontal plane, is perceived as something unreal.

Yes, of course, Samsung's flagships also have a very spectacular screen, "climbing" even on the side edges. But below and above there are still quite large areas that are not occupied by the screen. On the iPhone, the frame has almost the same width around the entire perimeter. From the bottom and top, it is several times smaller than that of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and from the side it is about twice as large. But due to the uniformity of its width, this is not striking.

Of course, because of this, I had to sacrifice what the iPhone seemed to be inconceivable without - the round "Home" button, which became one of the symbols of the entire line and was patented. This decision seems all the more daring, since Apple several generations ago expanded the functionality of the button with a fingerprint scanner, and then quite quickly brought this function to near perfection.

But now Apple is offering something even more innovative and, the company claims, safer: Face ID facial recognition technology. It is enough just to pick up the smartphone and look at it - and the device will carry out identification (we will talk in more detail about the operation of this function later). Haters, of course, will again remember Samsung with its iris scanner. But Apple has a big advantage: You don't have to look at the iPhone while holding it directly in front of your face.

Face ID is provided by two cameras: infrared and TrueDepth. The first determines that there is a live person in front of the camera, and the second projects 30 thousand invisible dots onto your face, after which this information is processed by the processor. It is to accommodate two additional cameras, in addition to the traditional front camera for shooting selfies and video communication, a black notch was made at the top of the screen. But it cannot be said that this notch greatly spoils the impression. Quite the contrary: the notch in the screen looks impressive. We understand that it is very difficult to implement this technologically, and this enhances the “techno-charm” of the model.

Round smooth edges of the device are made of a special alloy of steel, developed by order of Apple. It is not only very durable (although, of course, we did not dare to check), it is also really beautiful. We tested the Silver model, and here the frame looks just like polished metal, but in the Space Gray variant it has a deep dark tint that matches the body color perfectly (we got to see it with our own eyes).

However, it cannot be said that the Silver version looks less interesting. The most important thing here is a very noble mother-of-pearl shade of the back surface. He really admires. Photos, of course, do not convey this impression, but they also show that it is not just white.

As for the location of the buttons and connectors, it is the same, with one exception: the side button, which used to be mainly responsible for turning on / off, has now become longer - apparently, this is due to the fact that after the rejection of the Home button, it has increased functions, and therefore, it is now especially important that the user can quickly find it.

Another difference from the iPhone of previous generations (including the G8) is the vertical arrangement of the module with the rear cameras. Many joke that this is necessary in order to immediately see which iPhone a person has. Seriously, the explanation is purely technical: the saturation of the components in the upper central part of the body (there are just all the cameras for Face ID) made the rest of the elements move closer to the edges. But it is obvious that this does not spoil the appearance.

The last thing I would like to say about the design, but by no means the last in importance, is the size and convenience of the device. Despite having the largest display area of any Apple smartphone, the iPhone X is much smaller than the iPhone 8/7/6s/6 Plus and only slightly larger than the iPhone 8/7/6s/6. Below is an iPhone X next to an iPhone 6s.

In the hand, it lies very comfortably, although the edges and glass are slippery, and the device itself is heavy (especially for such a size). But some users may even like the latter: you immediately understand - a thing! :)

Screen

As has been repeatedly noted, the main feature of the new iPhone is the screen. Made using OLED technology, it has a diagonal of 5.8 ″ and a resolution of 2436 × 1125, which gives the highest dot density in the history of the line, but not a record density for competitors of 458 ppi. Before us is the largest update in the history of the iPhone, comparable only to the appearance of Retina displays in the iPhone 4. A detailed test of the new display was carried out by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are better than those of the screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left is the Nexus 7, on the right is the Apple iPhone X, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen on the Apple iPhone X is a little darker (brightness in photos is 109 versus 115 for the Nexus 7). The ghosting of reflected objects in the Apple iPhone X screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the screen layers (more specifically, between the outer glass and the matrix surface). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, better than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a white field displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 620 cd/m², the minimum was 1.9 cd/m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (it is located somewhere in the front in the upper part), which is enabled by default. In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness slider - the user sets the desired brightness level for the current conditions. If nothing is changed, then in complete darkness the brightness drops to 1.9 cd / m² (very dark), in an artificially lit office (about 550 lux), the screen brightness is set to 120 cd / m² (acceptable), in a very bright environment (corresponds to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) rises to 620 cd / m² (to the maximum, as it should be). The result did not quite suit us, so first in the dark, and then in office conditions, we slightly moved the brightness slider to the right, and for the above three conditions we got 20, 180-270 and 620 cd / m² (ideal). It turns out that the auto-brightness function works adequately, and it is possible to adjust the nature of the brightness change to the user's requirements. At any level of brightness there is modulation with a frequency of approximately 60 or 240 Hz. The figure below shows brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) for several brightness settings:

It can be seen that at maximum and close to it, the modulation amplitude is not very large, as a result, there is no visible flicker. However, with a strong decrease in brightness, modulation with a large relative amplitude appears, its presence can already be seen in the test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect or simply with rapid eye movement. Depending on individual sensitivity, such flickering can cause increased fatigue.

This screen uses a Super AMOLED matrix - an active matrix on organic light emitting diodes. A full color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B), but there are twice as many green subpixels, which can be referred to as RGBG. This is confirmed by a fragment of a microphoto:

For comparison, you can familiarize yourself with those used in mobile technology.

On the fragment above, you can count 4 green subpixels, 2 red (4 halves) and 2 blue (1 whole and 4 quarters), while repeating these fragments, you can lay out the entire screen without gaps and overlap. For such matrices, Samsung introduced the name PenTile RGBG. The manufacturer considers the screen resolution based on green subpixels, on the other two it will be two times lower. The location and shape of the subpixels in this variant is close to the case of the screen and some other newer Samsung devices (and not only) with AMOLED screens. It is worth noting that artifacts typical for such matrices are not visible on contrasting borders, and the manufacturer indicates that a subpixel anti-aliasing algorithm is used.

The screen has excellent viewing angles. True, the white color, when deviated even at small angles, acquires a slight bluish tint, but the black color remains just black at any angle. It is so black that the contrast setting is not applicable in this case. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of the Apple iPhone X and the second comparison participant, while the brightness of the screens is initially set to about 200 cd / m², and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K.

White field:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field.

And a test picture:

The color balance is slightly different, the color saturation is normal. Recall that a photograph cannot serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of color reproduction and is provided only for a conditional visual illustration. In this case, apparently due to the characteristics of the screen emission spectrum, the color balance and brightness of colors in the Apple iPhone X screen photographs are somewhat different from what is visible to the eye and determined by the spectrophotometer.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen. White field:

The brightness at an angle on both screens has noticeably decreased (in order to avoid strong darkening, the shutter speed is increased compared to previous photos), but in the case of the Apple iPhone X, the drop in brightness is much less pronounced. As a result, with formally the same brightness, the Apple iPhone X screen visually looks much brighter (compared to LCD screens), since you often have to look at the screen of a mobile device at least at a slight angle.

And a test picture:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens and the brightness of the Apple iPhone X smartphone at an angle is noticeably higher. Switching the state of the elements of the matrix is \u200b\u200balmost instantaneous, but there may be a step at the front of the switch-on width of about 17 ms (which corresponds to a screen refresh rate of 60 Hz). For example, the dependence of brightness on time looks like this when moving from black to white and vice versa:

In some conditions, the presence of such a step can lead to plumes trailing behind moving objects. However, dynamic scenes in films on OLED screens are distinguished by high definition and even some “twitchy” movements.

The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.22, which is almost equal to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates very little from the power dependence:

The color gamut is sRGB:

Let's look at the spectra:

Such spectra are typical for OLED matrices - the components are well separated, which makes it possible to achieve a wide color gamut. However, in this case, the color gamut is carefully adjusted to the sRGB borders. As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation.

This applies to images that have an sRGB profile or no profile at all. However, native to today's top-of-the-line Apple devices is the Display P3 color space, with slightly more saturated greens and reds. The Display P3 space is based on SMPTE DCI-P3 but has a D65 white point and a gamma curve of approximately 2.2. In addition, the manufacturer claims that starting with iOS 9.3, color management is supported at the system level, which makes it easier for iOS applications to correctly display images with a prescribed color profile. Indeed, by supplementing the test images (JPG and PNG files) with a Display P3 profile, we got a color gamut wider than sRGB (output in Safari):

Note that the coordinates of the primary colors almost exactly matched those prescribed for the DCI-P3 standard. We look at the spectra in the case of test images with the Display P3 profile:

It can be seen that in this case there is a slight cross-mixing of components in the red region, that is, the native color space for the Apple iPhone X screen is slightly wider than Display P3.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered acceptable for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature changes little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This Apple device has a function night shift, which makes the picture warmer at night (how much warmer the user specifies). For a description of why this correction might be useful, see the iPad Pro 9.7 article. In any case, when entertaining with a tablet or smartphone at night, it is better to reduce the screen brightness to a minimum, but still comfortable level, and only then, to calm your own paranoia, turn the screen yellow with the Night Shift setting.

There is a function true tone, which, when enabled, adjusts the color balance to the environment. For example, we activated it and placed the tablet under cool white LED lights, resulting in values of 3.3 for ΔE and 6500 K for color temperature. Under a halogen incandescent lamp (warm light) - 0.3 and 5200 K, respectively, that is, the color temperature has become lower, and the balance has become closer to the emission spectrum of a completely black body. The function works as expected. Note that now the current standard is to calibrate display devices to a white point of 6500 K, but in principle, correction for the color temperature of external light can be useful if you want to achieve a better match between the image on the screen and what is seen on paper (or on any media , on which colors are formed by reflecting incident light) under current conditions.

Let's summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. It is acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen also include an effective oleophobic coating, support for sRGB color gamut (with the participation of the OS) and good color balance. At the same time, let's recall the general advantages of OLED screens: true black color (if nothing is reflected on the screen), a noticeably smaller drop in image brightness when viewed from an angle than an LCD. The disadvantages include modulation of the screen brightness, which appears at low brightness. Users who are particularly sensitive to flicker may experience fatigue as a result. However, overall the screen quality is very high.

Control and use of the screen

Due to the fact that the Home button is gone, many familiar commands are now performed differently. The first few minutes it is unusual, but then you realize that it is also quite intuitive. For example, to close an app and return to the home screen, simply swipe it up from the bottom. To bring up application thumbnails, you need to swipe up from the bottom and hold your finger in the middle of the screen.

Another interesting gesture is to move your finger along the bottom edge of the screen: this way you can move from one open application to another. By the way, at the bottom, while applications are running, a long white bar glows, showing where to swipe your finger (in horizontal orientation, it is located, of course, along the long edge that turned out to be from below).

In general, all commands are simply redistributed between the remaining buttons and gestures. The most frequently used things are made as simple and intuitive as possible, and some more specific ones will have to be searched on the Internet. For example, to restart or completely turn off the smartphone, you need to press and hold the power and volume up buttons at the same time. And to take a screenshot - the same buttons must be pressed quickly.

An interesting question that arises in connection with the new screen: how do old applications use it? The answer turned out to be simple: they simply do not use the bottom and top parts of the screen, that is, you see black bars. But since these stripes turn out to be, as it were, a continuation of the faces, this does not annoy you, it just turns out the screen is a little smaller in area. However, auxiliary elements of the OS itself, such as time and battery charge, are just there, if this is not disabled in the application itself.

If the application is optimized (and these are many popular applications, including Russian ones - for example, Yandex.Maps), then it uses the entire area, and in such a way that useful information does not fall into the recess. However, physically the picture is rendered, of course, without a notch.

Face ID and the use of new cameras

As already mentioned, one of the main innovations is the emergence of new cameras: infrared and TrueDepth. Their main function is to identify the face of the Face ID user. And, I must say, it works great. Often you don’t even think about the fact that the smartphone must do some kind of operation in order to recognize you - just pick it up, take a look - and you’re done. Everything happens by itself almost instantly.

Since we used the smartphone for only one day, we cannot say how recognition will take place in difficult conditions and with daily changes in appearance (for example, for women - with and without makeup, for men - with different stubble lengths), we cannot. However, what we managed to check was unlocking in complete darkness. Indeed, it works.

There is one interesting nuance: in the settings you can turn off the need for a glance to unlock. That is, even if your eyes are closed or your gaze is directed somewhere to the side, the smartphone will recognize you. In practice, this rather interferes, since, hypothetically, random triggering is possible. And of course, this lowers security. But here it's a matter of taste.

Performance

The SoC and RAM specifications of the iPhone X are identical to those of the iPhone 8 Plus. The smartphone runs on the new Apple A11 Bionic platform. This is a 64-bit SoC that includes 6 cores, of which two are high-performance, and the other four are energy efficient. Moreover, at maximum load, all six cores can work simultaneously.

The amount of RAM, like the iPhone 8 Plus, is 3 GB. Therefore, the difference with it in the tests may be associated, first of all, with a different screen resolution.

Let's start with browser benchmarks: SunSpider 1.0.2, Octane Benchmark, Kraken Benchmark and . The Safari browser was used. Especially for a more visual comparison, we conducted new performance tests on the iPhone 7 Plus, updating the smartphone OS to the current version.

We can see that the difference between the results of iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X does not exceed the margin of error. As for the iPhone 7 Plus, in comparison with it, both new products, of course, show a much better result.

Now let's see how the iPhone X performs in the comprehensive AnTuTu and Geekbench 4 benchmarks.

An AnTuTu win and a small loss in Geekbench 4 are unlikely to indicate anything, but at least we see that there is no anomalous spread in the results.

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to testing GPU performance. We used 3DMark, GFXBenchmark Metal, and Basemark Metal Pro, which was created specifically for devices that support Metal technology.

Recall that Offscreen tests are a display of a 1080p image on the screen, regardless of the actual screen resolution. And Onscreen tests are the output of a picture in the resolution that corresponds to the screen resolution of the device. That is, off-screen tests are indicative in terms of the abstract performance of the SoC, and the rest of the tests are indicative of the comfort of playing on a specific device.

Judging by GFXBenchmark, the iPhone X is inferior to the iPhone 8 Plus, and if in Onscreen modes this is quite understandable (the higher the resolution, the fewer frames the SoC can output), then in Offscreen mode the results should have been identical. But no. It turns out that the novelty is slightly inferior even to the iPhone 7 Plus.

Here we see that, in general, the parity of the two new iPhones is again obtained. And, most importantly, their serious superiority over the iPhone 7 Plus.

Finally - Basemark Metal Pro.

The strangest result in our testing. Perhaps the test needs some kind of optimization for the iPhone X.

One way or another, based on the results of all performance tests, we can conclude that there is no significant performance degradation due to an increase in screen resolution, and in general this is about the same level as the iPhone 8 Plus. Well, superiority over the iPhone 7 Plus almost everywhere is undeniable. On the other hand, gaming applications should still be optimized for the iPhone X in order to get the most out of its hardware.

cameras

The main camera of the iPhone X has only two differences from the camera of the iPhone 8 Plus: firstly, stabilization has been implemented for the telephoto lens, and secondly, the aperture of the telephoto lens is now larger. However, it was more interesting for us to see what both cameras are capable of in difficult conditions, and also to compare them in practice with the iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 8. This section of the article prepared Anton Solovyov.

Apparently, the dual module here is the same as in the iPhone 8 Plus - moreover, it can be found in other well-known manufacturers. However, the “plus” camera seems to work worse on purpose, preventing the module from fully opening. Here, the detailing is at a very high level, and the software processing is almost invisible. But the main achievement is that now the shooting quality of both modules is practically the same.

28 mm 56 mm

Software processing on the pictures of the "portrait" module is still striking, especially when shooting indoors. But in daylight, despite cloudy weather and rain and snow, both modules behave very worthy. Perhaps, here we can safely say that such cameras will give odds to compact cameras and even compete with more serious ones. But only in good light!

We've tried to avoid comparison with that-who-must-not-be-named, but the comparison is unavoidable, especially since the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 almost certainly has the same dual module as the new Apple smartphones. In good light, the mentioned cameras work almost perfectly, it is pointless to look for differences in their pictures. But we couldn’t avoid bumping them head-on, so we threw the subjects into one of the most difficult conditions — office space after sunset. This is where their weaknesses show up.

Below are fragments of shots with a strong increase. From left to right are the iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8.

Apple iPhone 8 Plus Apple iPhone X Samsung Galaxy Note 8
Wide module

Telemodule

Notice how surprisingly fickle the cameras are: the Note 8 does a better job of handling noise and soft shadows, but it does oversharpen in places, losing detail at times. The iPhone X performs better overall than the iPhone 8 Plus, but it’s not easy to compare it directly with the Note 8: it performs clearly better in some cases, and clearly worse in others. The Note 8's flash is more powerful (last photo), but without it in completely wild conditions (when shooting the server), it smears the noise a lot. iPhone X in this case turns the noise into a huge grain - and this is already a matter of taste.

However, both the "portrait" and "landscape" modules of both flagships work equally well, so here we have to admit that friendship has won.

Separately, about the iPhone X camera, we can say that it will perfectly cope with many scenarios, especially in good lighting. But it’s not worth demanding the supernatural from her, otherwise you can be disappointed.

We also offer you videos shot on the iPhone X cameras. The first two videos are 4K video shot on the main camera at a wide angle, with the main lens.

Another clip is a Full HD video shot using a telephoto lens.

Last but not least, selfies can now be taken in portrait mode, with bokeh and other effects.

Autonomy and heating

We have not yet had the opportunity to use the iPhone X in real life (we have yet to), so we cannot say how long it will work in everyday scenarios. But judging by the game test, the result is no worse than that of the "pluses". It is clear that we are talking about the maximum load, and in other situations the alignment may be different. But these numbers are very encouraging.

3D Game Mode (GFX Benchmark Metal, Manhattan 3.1 battery test)
Apple iPhone X 2 hours 59 minutes
Apple iPhone 8 Plus 2 hours 24 minutes
Apple iPhone 7 Plus 2 hours 13 minutes

But let's add a fly in the ointment: the novelty is heated more strongly. This is especially noticeable in games. Below is a thermal image rear surfaces obtained after three runs in a row (approximately 10 minutes of work) of the Basemark Metal 3D test:

Heating is strongly localized in the upper right part of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 44 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees). The Apple iPhone 7 Plus gets less heat in this test.

conclusions

How long have we been waiting for this! Apple has finally released not just a very good product, but something more. Indeed, in the entire history of the iPhone line, this is perhaps the most striking update. Perhaps something similar in terms of the degree of innovation was the case with the iPhone 4 - if you remember, it was then that the Retina display first appeared (and competitors could not repeat it for a long time), then the iPhone first had a glass back surface. In 2017, Apple returned to glass as the main material, but made another revolution: it abandoned the Home button and placed the screen on the entire front surface.

Another thing is that this step can hardly be considered innovative, if we take the entire industry. The same Samsung Galaxy Note 8 also has no buttons on the front side and also a huge display, and, of course, you can’t forget about Xiaomi Mi Mix. However, Apple does not seek to formally be the first in something, but to present technologies and the achievements of engineers in a special way, “building” a new user experience around this. And in the iPhone X, we are just seeing this.

The new gestures are comfortable and intuitive, and the design of the pre-installed apps so gracefully takes into account the notch at the top of the front surface that we admire it rather than get annoyed. Finally, Face ID is likely to become the de facto standard for the industry, just as Apple previously made the fingerprint scanner the de facto standard.

Of course, you need to use your smartphone longer to understand how convenient it is with all this in real life (and we will definitely do it), but so far there is a feeling that everything is done at the highest level. At least we didn't find any significant drawbacks that could be considered the price of innovation and that could keep us from buying.

True, there are a number of temporary problems. For example, without optimization, third-party applications cannot use the entire screen area, leaving black bars at the top and bottom (with landscape orientation, left and right). Also, as of yet, various payment apps that use Touch ID cannot use Face ID. However, we understand that this is a matter of time. Chances are, by the time you can buy an iPhone X, everyone is already optimizing their apps.

Yes, yes, ordering the iPhone X is not so easy anymore - the next deliveries will be only in December, and then if you're lucky. On the day of the start of sales - November 3 - only a few lucky ones will be able to buy a "top ten" of extremely limited lots in offline stores. And this means that golden times (for Apple and resellers :)) are returning: queues, hype and other delights of a shortage. And this despite the really high prices! But one can only be glad that Apple has released a product that people (and not individual fans, but millions) are ready to buy no matter what.

It is difficult for manufacturers to offer something new, but there is no limit to perfection. The external similarity and overall dimensions of the device do not mean its identity with its predecessor. Manufacturers in Apple iPhone X promise to use the best mobile developments. Ten in the title owes its appearance to the iPhone 2G, which turns ten years old.

Design approach

Almost completely (there is room for a tiny inscription at the top) the front panel is occupied by a new modern display, which even visually expands the existing picture. In addition, for a mobile phone is intended:

  • one-piece body made of solid reinforced glass;
  • two panels are interconnected by a stainless steel frame;
  • lack of mechanical access buttons to the operating system;
  • touch widescreen Super Retina-display with a diagonal size of 5.8 inches and OLED technology;
  • available in two colors: silver and space grey. The latter is obtained by vacuum deposition;
  • on the top substrate there is a camera, a dot projector and a speaker, a microphone and an IR emitter, light and proximity sensors.

Technical hardware

The power of a smartphone is determined by its OS platform and processor. For your apple iphone x manufacturers chose to use the 6-core Apple A11 Bionic chipset, which is 25% faster than its predecessors. It is based on a neural system that allows you to recognize surrounding objects and places. With the help of a processor and RAM - 3 GB and ROM 64/256 (depending on modification), it can identify not only faces, but also run applications and games with additional reality and smoothness. Thanks to the proprietary graphics accelerator, any 3D games will be at the disposal of the owner, including those with Metal 2.

A separate review is worthy of the video modules of the device. If everything is clear with the main dual camera, designed for 12 + 12 megapixels and flash, then we need to dwell on the front camera in more detail. Installed by Apple True Depth, completely replacing Touch ID, removes the blocking with just a scan of the owner's gaze. Fingerprinting and face ID are gone, though the ultra-accurate Face ID scanner app remains, helping Apple Pay pay bills too.

The smartphone supports wireless and fast battery charging. If you have a docking station, just put the device on its surface and all capacity problems will be solved. The exact volume of the double battery is not yet known. The developers promise that it will last for 2 hours more than the iPhone 7.

conclusions

With the powerful support of modern electronics and the wide possibilities of the new device from Apple, the life of ordinary people can become much more interesting and fulfilling. It remains to wait for the sale of the Apple iPhone X.

iPhone X is Apple's new smartphone launched to coincide with the anniversary of the original iPhone 2G. iPhone X received an all-glass body, a virtually frameless Super Retina display, a TrueDepth camera, an ultra-precise Face ID face scanner, support for fast and wireless charging, and a double L-shaped battery.

The presentation of the iPhone X took place on September 12. The iPhone X release date is scheduled for November 3rd. The iPhone X is priced at RUB 79,990 for the 64GB model and RUB 91,990 for the 256GB model.

A few months before Apple's presentation, it became clear that the company would call its smartphone with an OLED display something special. And so it happened. The first iPhone with an OLED display was named the iPhone X (ten, ten), in honor of the anniversary of the original iPhone 2G, which turned ten years old in the summer of 2017.

Design

For the first time in three years, Apple has decided to seriously change the design of its smartphones. iPhone X is fundamentally different from previous models. The back cover of the smartphone is made of reinforced glass, and not aluminum, as before. By switching (or rather, returning) to the use of glass, Apple managed to significantly refresh the appearance of the iPhone X.

True, the glass panels of the iPhone X are not ordinary. They are both made from the most durable glass ever used by Apple in its devices. The color on the panel is applied in a special way in seven layers. Only in this way the company's engineers were able to achieve the correct shade and the required density. In addition, the final reflective optical slot makes the color of the glasses as saturated as possible. Both the front and back glass of the iPhone X case are coated with an oleophobic coating. It is problematic to stain them, but even in this case, fingerprints and smudges are removed very easily.

The element between the glasses is no less impressive. The design of the iPhone X case is strengthened by a steel frame made of a special stainless steel alloy. The alloy is distinguished by the highest purity, beauty and strength.

The shape of the iPhone X body has also changed. It has become more elongated, which happened due to the smartphone being equipped with a display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. Nevertheless, the iPhone X remained similar to its predecessors and did not lose its classic and recognizable look for Apple smartphones.

The main changes in the design of the iPhone X on the front panel. Around the display of the smartphone, the frames have almost completely disappeared, not only the side ones, but also the bottom one. Along with the bottom bezel, the iPhone X also lacked the traditional physical home button. The top frame has also changed. On its sides there are original cutouts for the screen.

On the substrate left from the upper chamber, a whole scattering of sensors is presented. It houses: a speaker, a microphone, a 7-megapixel camera, a dot projector, an ambient light sensor, a proximity sensor, an IR emitter and an IR camera.

Body colors

The iPhone X will be available in two colors: Silver and Space Gray. Note that for the steel frame of the iPhone X case in space gray color, Apple used a vacuum deposition process. Thus, it was possible to achieve a perfectly accurate match between the color of the frame and the color of the glass on the rear panel.

Display

The iPhone X has a huge 5.8-inch Super Retina HD OLED display. Apple for the first time equipped its smartphone with an OLED display - before that, all iPhones had liquid crystal displays.

The OLED display of the iPhone X has many advantages over the LCD displays of previous iPhones. It has better color reproduction, increased contrast and much more saturated colors. In addition, the OLED display consumes less power, which will have a positive effect on the autonomy of the iPhone X.

There are almost no bezels around the iPhone X display. The side and bottom frames are reduced to a minimum, and from the top there is only a substrate in the center, on which various sensors and the front camera are placed. Apple deliberately did not completely abandon the frames, so that during the use of the iPhone X there were no accidental clicks.

The iPhone X display has support for True Tone color temperature adaptation technology, which first appeared in smartphones. True Tone technology provides for the use of four-channel light sensors in the display.

They monitor the ambient light conditions and automatically change the color temperature of the iPhone screen. Thanks to True Tone technology, reading from the iPhone X display is comparable to reading a regular paper book.

The OLED technologies in the Super Retina HD display have been improved. Apple has gone to great lengths to bring technology to its own highest standard. The result is an HDR display with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, superb brightness and color accuracy, and a wide color gamut.

The iPhone X's 5.8-inch display has a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels and a pixel density of 458.

The iPhone X display extends to the very edges of the smartphone's bezel. Apple has gone further than its competitors, which introduced frameless smartphones earlier, and used a new approach to the location of the controller and tiered placement of chips.

This provided the effect of perfectly smoothing the pixels in the corners of the display. The borders of the iPhone X screen look smooth and do not distort at all.

The latest Super Retina HD display uses an advanced color management system that renders both sRGB and P3 content correctly.

The iPhone X user will see on the screen of his smartphone exactly the color that was intended by the artist, designer or director.

The iPhone X display received support for high dynamic range (HDR). iPhone X owners will be able to watch series, TV programs or movies shot in HDR10 and Dolby Vision formats. In addition, HDR shots will look even more realistic on the iPhone X screen.

Specifications

The iPhone X is based on a six-core Apple A11 Bionic processor. The four cores of the A11 Bionic are efficient, while the remaining two are productive.

However, if the iPhone X needs more production capacity, the CPU starts using all six cores to perform tasks.

The efficient A11 Bionic cores are 75% faster than the Apple A10 Fusion found in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, while the performance cores are 25% faster.

A11 Bionic got a new name for a reason. The fact is that it is not an improved version of the A10X Fusion. This is a completely new processor based on a dual-core neural system capable of recognizing faces, objects and places.

The neural system of the A11 Bionic chip processes machine learning tasks at up to 600 billion operations per second! The neural system itself is a device that was created specifically for machine learning.

It is able to perform calculations for neural networks in an incredibly fast way, while remaining efficient.

With four efficient cores, the A11 Bionic allows iPhone X to handle everyday tasks faster with little power consumption.

When the user will load the smartphone harder, then productive cores will also come into play with full activity.

The A11 Bionic processor takes AR-enabled apps and games to a whole new level. The iPhone X chip noticeably increases their realism and smoothness. And with regular games, the iPhone X will do just fine, again thanks to the A11 Bionic.

The A11 Bionic GPU (designed by Apple) is optimized for all modern 3D games, including those created using next-generation Metal 2 graphics technology.

The amount of RAM iPhone X is 3 GB, built-in - 64 and 256, depending on the model.

Face ID scanner

iPhone X comes with an ultra-accurate Face ID face scanner. With Face ID, smartphone owners can both unlock their device and verify their identity when making purchases in the App Store, iTunes Store, or regular online stores using Apple Pay.

The Face ID face scanner is based on the TrueDepth camera system. It includes:

  • Infrared camera.
  • Point projector.
  • Infrared emitter.

The Dot Projector projects over 30,000 invisible dots onto the iPhone X owner's face to create their own unique map.

Such a large number of fixed points allows scanning with maximum accuracy.

The infrared emitter is responsible for ensuring that the Face ID scanner can recognize the owner's face even in complete darkness. The emitter emits an invisible beam of infrared light, thereby recognizing the user.

The infrared camera is engaged in reading the dot structure and creates an image in the infrared spectrum. After that, it sends the image to the Secure Enclave module, which is built into the A11 Bionic processor.

Here, at the heart of the iPhone X, a check is made to match the face of the owner of the smartphone and the user who is trying to unlock.

When creating Face ID, Apple has provided protection against accidental unlocks of the iPhone X. The scanner technology will only unlock when the user specifically looks at the smartphone.

Face ID is more than a complete replacement for the Touch ID fingerprint scanner in terms of the iPhone X's basic security system. Face ID provides protection against fraud using masks or photos.

This means that the iPhone X cannot be unlocked by using a snapshot of the owner of the smartphone.

The face card scanned by Face ID is only stored on the device in encrypted form. In addition, it is additionally protected by the Secure Enclave module.

The Face ID face scanner recognizes the owner even if his appearance changes. Face ID uses the machine learning technology of the A11 Bionic processor to remember the user.

touch ID

The iPhone X does not have a fingerprint sensor. The Face ID face scanner has completely replaced the Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Battery

During the presentation of the iPhone X, Apple executives, as usual, did not name the exact volume of the smartphone's battery. They only clarified that the iPhone X "works up to 2 hours longer than the iPhone 7."

Namely:
  • Up to 21 hours talk time.
  • Up to 12 hours online.
  • Up to 13 hours when watching videos.
  • Up to 60 hours of audio playback.

Wireless charger

iPhone X is equipped with support for wireless charging.

Contrary to many early rumors, Apple's flagship wireless charging is quite traditional and is performed using a special Qi-standard docking station.

The fact that Apple has chosen to use a commonly accepted standard is definitely encouraging. It will be possible to charge the iPhone X using any Qi standard docking station, which, to put it mildly, is not in short supply.

Yes, and new charging stations after the release of the iPhone X will be released with enviable regularity. Belkin and Mophie, for example, have already created one docking station specifically for the iPhone X.

Apple also has its own wireless charging, like all the company's products - special. The ultra-thin AirPower Charging Station lets you charge multiple Apple devices at the same time.

For this device, for example, iPhone X, AirPods and Apple Watch, it is enough just to put it down. Note that AirPower will go on sale only in 2018.

fast charging

The iPhone X also has support for fast charging, right through the Lighting connector, which has acquired Type-C Power Delivery technology. Apple's decision to keep Lighting in place, rather than switch to the rapidly growing USB-C, will affect the ease of transition for users from older iPhones to iPhone X.

Apple didn't go into detail about how fast charging works, but iPhone X is known to charge from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes using a USB-C power adapter.

Water resistance

iPhone X received protection against water and dust according to the IP67 standard. Thus, there was no improvement in comparison with this characteristic for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

cameras

The main camera of the iPhone X is dual, including a wide-angle and a telephoto lens. True, it is completely unlike the camera of the iPhone 7 Plus, similar in type, including externally. Dual camera iPhone X is located vertically.

The resolution of each lens is 12 MP, the aperture of the wide-angle lens is ƒ/1.8, the telephoto lens is ƒ/2.4. The iPhone X camera uses Dual Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) to help you take great pictures in low light.

One of the main features of the dual camera, Portrait mode, has been improved in the iPhone X. The details of the shots with the effect of depth of field are clearer, the blurring of the background is natural.

Shooting on the iPhone X in portrait mode will work in low light conditions, both thanks to improvements in the camera itself and the ability to use the flash.

The iPhone X camera supports Portrait Lighting. The smartphone detects the depth of space and the contours of the face, allowing you to create images with imitation of professional lighting.

  • Daylight - focus on the face of the subject, blurred background.

  • Contour light - semitones with dark and light areas.

  • Studio light - the face of the subject is brightly lit, the image is as clear as possible.

  • Stage light - the face of the object is as if illuminated by a spotlight, a rich black background.

  • Stage light-mono - similar to the previous effect, but in black and white.

The image signal processor (ISP) in the iPhone X camera has been improved. He was able to recognize people in the frame, as well as various parameters, such as movement or brightness of lighting. By obtaining this information, the processor makes the frame much better even before the actual shooting.

Technologically, the iPhone X camera has been upgraded wherever possible. The color gamut has been expanded, autofocus has become faster, advanced pixel processing technologies have been applied, and HDR image quality has been improved.

iPhone X is equipped with a new flash - True Tone Quad-LED with Slow Sync. By combining slow shutter speeds and high flash rates, Slow Sync flash illuminates subjects without darkening the background. And True Tone Quad-LED technology avoids overexposed areas in photos due to uniform illumination.

The quality of video shooting on the iPhone X has also been raised. The smartphone camera allows you to shoot in 4K at 60 fps, 1080p at 240 fps (Slo-mo), as well as in time-lapse mode. In either mode, the new video stabilization technology minimizes shaking as much as possible.

No less globally, the front camera has been updated in the iPhone X. The large-scale changes in the front camera are directly hinted at by its name - TrueDepth, and not FaceTime, as in previous iPhone models. Apple decided to give the front camera of the iPhone X a new name, of course, for a reason.

The TrueDepth camera includes a complex system consisting of an IR camera, an IR emitter, a dot projector, and a 7MP camera itself.

Together with the A11 Bionic processor, this system provides four key functions of the iPhone X front camera.

The first key feature is the previously discussed Face ID face scanner. The second is the "Portrait" mode when taking selfies.

Just a year ago, Apple made it possible to take photos with the effect of depth of field on the main camera, as now the same opportunity appears on the front camera. Moreover, the front camera of the iPhone X portrait mode works much easier than it was before. Focusing on the subject is done with exactly one touch.

You don't have to make any special arrangements for shooting. The effect is the same - the subject is in focus, and the background is blurred.

The third key feature is the ability to create portrait lighting, just like the main camera. Apple has done extensive research in the field of portrait art and has created a function that calculates how light interacts with the facial features of an iPhone X user.

Based on the data obtained, amazing lighting effects are created:

  • Daylight - the background is blurred, and the focus is clearly on the face.

  • Contour light - expressive midtones with light and dark areas are used.

  • Studio light - the image is as clear as possible, the user's face is brightly lit.

  • Stage Light - The user's face is illuminated by a spotlight and the background is deep black.

  • Stage light - mono - similar to the previous effect, but in black and white.

And finally, the fourth unique feature of the TrueDepth front camera is the ability to create Animoji. Animoji are animated emoticons based on the user's face.

The TrueDepth camera, together with the A11 Bionic processor, analyzes the facial expressions of more than 50 facial muscles and, based on this, animates one of the 12 animoji.

Apple's new emoji can talk! While recording an animoji, it is enough to say the desired phrase and the recipient will receive not only a visual but also a voice message.

From the article you will learn

The legendary version of the iPhone marked X, according to Apple, has long gone on sale in the Russian market. Therefore, people are interested in the technical characteristics of the phone, features, price and special features that will encourage you to buy such a device, or, conversely, spoil the whole impression!

Key features of the iPhone X

If you have come to this page just to see the main characteristics, then the table below will be enough for you. For Apple fans, we have prepared a detailed overview of each feature and all the features!

This is the first iPhone model that has undergone major changes in terms of design, respectively, hence the increased attention to the new smartphone. While most Apple smartphones used to be made of aluminum, the iPhone X has a back cover made of heavy-duty tempered reinforced glass, which makes it possible to wirelessly charge the device.

The front of the smartphone also uses a glass panel, and in order to achieve the most accurate color of the entire phone, the paint is applied in 7 layers, which achieves the highest contrast hue. Both glasses are coated with a special oleophobic coating to reduce smudges and fingerprints on the case. You can erase them in a split second.

The main advantage of this generation of smartphones is the bezel-less display, but Samsung developers have already surprised us with such innovations. The so-called “island” remained at the top of the display, on which all the most important sensors are located. (illumination, IR camera, point projector and many others).

Prior to this model, all Apple devices were equipped with liquid crystal displays. In the tenth version, it is equipped with a 5.8-inch OLED display with Super Retina HD technology. Such matrices usually have many advantages. For example, improved color reproduction, rich colors, contrast, thinner thickness, efficient power consumption.

As mentioned earlier, the display has almost no frame, and the side and bottom borders are almost invisible. They are barely visible, but this is done on purpose so that the user does not accidentally click on the screen and unplanned actions are not performed.

A special place here is occupied by the new True Tone technology, which appeared only in the iPhone 10. It automatically monitors the state of illumination in the environment where you are using four-channel sensors. Due to this, the maximum change in color reproduction on the screen is achieved. This is useful, for example, when you are reading text from a screen. It will feel as if reading is carried out from a regular paper medium.

The built-in HDR display has a record-breaking 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, providing its users with the highest quality of brightness, color gamut, and color accuracy. Never before has a picture been transmitted with such accuracy. The maximum display resolution is 2436 by 1125 pixels, and the pixel density is 458. As a result, all pictures and videos shot in high quality clearly convey the colors that were intended by the artists. No distortion, just realistic colors.

Processor, RAM, GPU

By default, the new generation of iPhone is now equipped with a 6-core A11 Bionic processor, which has 4 energy-efficient cores (Mistral) and 2 performance cores (Moonsoon). For example, if a smartphone lacks power, it will use all 6 cores, but this will be required in rare cases. As a result, the energy-efficient cores of the new processor became 75% more productive, and the remaining 2 cores were 25% more productive when compared with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. The clock frequency is 2.5 GHz.

By the way, the new A11 processor was named Bionic due to the use of a special neural network that allows processing hundreds of billions of operations per second. This is truly a high power and technological advancement in the field of mobile phones. Thanks to this processor, high and stable operation of the face recognition scanner is achieved.

Smartphones have 3 GB of RAM. Yes, some Apple competitors are already using 4 GB in their devices, but in general, these factors do not reduce the position of the iPhone X, which is considered one of the most powerful devices at the moment.

Built-in memory is presented only in two versions. These are 64 and 256 GB. Here you already decide for yourself - either to take a minimum, or immediately a maximum. Judging by the volume of demanding games, applications and snapshots created, the minimum version will be extremely insufficient for active users!

Another feature of the new generation of iPhone is an improved camera that allows you to create professional pictures of the highest quality.

The main camera consists of two lenses, the resolution of each of which is 12 megapixels. It is also worth considering that a special dual image stabilization system is used here, so that taking pictures is possible even in poor or low light conditions without loss of quality.

Pleases the new camera mode - "Portrait shooting", which allows you to create a clear photo against a black background with perfect exposure of color tones. It is possible to take pictures with simulated professional lighting if, for example, you are shooting a person. In a nutshell, improvements and refinements, the iPhone X has improved almost everything possible to create the perfect solution for creating quality pictures.

The new flash technology deserves special attention, in which there is a Slow Sync option. It will allow you to illuminate any objects without darkening the background in the photo. The maximum shooting resolution for video is 4K at 60 frames, and 1080P at 240 frames. There is an option to eliminate jitter, which will allow you to create high-quality videos without twitching.

The front camera has undergone major changes, and this is fully justified. Now it is called TrueDepth and serves as the main source of recognition of your face, replacing the familiar Touch ID. Its resolution is 7 megapixels, it works in conjunction with a processor, which provides fast face recognition and projection of several tens of thousands of points for user recognition. Due to this, Face ID scanner technology works perfectly.

Due to the front camera, it is possible to create various color effects that will be of interest to both professional photographers and amateurs, as well as work with Animoji - animated emoticons that project your facial expressions onto an animal animation. As a result, your face can be replaced, for example, with a fox or a cat, and it will exactly repeat all your actions, only in its role.

Wireless charging, battery, operating system

At the official presentation, Apple only mentioned that the battery lasts up to about 2 hours more than the iPhone 7, without giving exact capacity numbers, but leaks from trusted sources have already appeared on the Internet, so we can safely assume that the battery capacity will be 2716 mAh.

Below is a table to give you an idea of how long your battery will last.

The new iPhone 10 also features wireless charging, which is why it uses a glass case. Over-the-air charging uses the generally accepted Qi standard, so you can use any docking station to charge your smartphone. Therefore, some users will not even have to buy additional devices if they have previously purchased docking stations. This also creates a huge market with a choice of wireless docking stations, where each user can choose a particular gadget at his own discretion.

Apple also has its own universal wireless charger, which is characterized by increased charge speed, subtlety and elegance. Here you can charge several devices at once, for example, a smartphone and AirPods.

Another interesting feature of the new device is fast charging. Now the standard Lighting connector is equipped with Type-C technology, through which the process will be carried out. According to Apple, you can charge your smartphone from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes.

As for the software in the new iPhone, everything is clear - iOS 11, on board of which there is just a huge number of different features and innovations. Until now, some functions are being finalized by developers, new beta versions are being tested and released, and even at the time X is released, some services and options are being finalized and the problems and vulnerabilities found are constantly being fixed.

Equipment

Your phone comes with EarPods that come with a Lighting connector for great music sound, a Lighting cable, a power adapter, and an adapter for standard headphones with a mini-jack.

If you decide to charge your smartphone using wireless charging, you will have to buy a docking station. You can use both the official version from Apple and the solution from third-party manufacturers.

Price for iPhone X in Russia

Oddly enough, Russia is among the top five countries where the iPhone X will be sold at the highest price.

Apple's official website already has information that the cost of a device with 64 GB will be 79,990 rubles, and with 256 GB, 91,990 rubles.

As a rule, in the first days of sales, many retail chains even inflated prices, so you should expect an even higher price for this gadget as demand grows!

The sales start date started on November 3rd, and the pre-order started from October 27th, including Russia!

Conclusion

In general, we can say that the iPhone X is really one of the most anticipated smartphones in the history of Apple, which, according to the presentation, already makes it clear that we will be presented with a truly innovative, powerful and modern product that justifies its name “anniversary”.

You can talk endlessly about the capabilities of a smartphone, since it really has a lot of different sensors and technologies built into it for various needs and tasks.

The version of iOS 11 deserves special attention, in which a huge number of options are integrated, but we will evaluate all this only after personal use, and see if Apple will meet the expectations of millions of users around the world or not ...
