While testing the new features of Windows 10, many of the users found themselves a small but annoying nuisance. It turned out that viewing images of popular formats became possible only in the Photos application, while in Windows 8.1 users could choose between Photos and Photo Viewer. Unfortunately, you cannot install this program as the main tool for viewing images, since it is simply not available in the "Default Applications" subsection. The same goes for the "Open With" context menu dialog. If you open it, you will find only "Photos" and "Paint" there. The regular Program Association tool will not help you either, since again only two formats will be available for Windows Photo Viewer: TIF and TIFF.
But it doesn't matter. The situation with the missing function can be fixed quite easily by making small changes to the system registry. To do this, open the registry editor and expand the following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows Photo Viewer/Capabilities/FileAssociations
In the last subsection, you will see two parameters with the names of exactly the same two formats that were mentioned in the previous paragraphs. Immediately create a new parameter of type REG_SZ (plain string) with the name.jpg and the value PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff. Create exactly the same parameters for bmp, dib, jpe, gif, jfif, jpeg, jxr and png formats.
After that, open the Settings app and then go to System -> Default apps -> Set defaults by app.
In the left column of the window that opens, select the application "Windows Photo Viewer", click "Choose default values for this program" ...
... and check the boxes next to the formats you added through the registry.
Save your changes and check the contents of the "Open with" menu. If everything was done correctly by you, for the files of the added formats, the option “Windows Photo Viewer” will appear there. It's all. Now you can easily make the appeared program your default image viewer.
And further. For those who do not want to mess with the registry, I can recommend the free utility WinAero Tweaker, but you will need the latest version. Run it, scroll through the list of available tweaks to the very end. At the end of the list, you will find the option "Activate Windows Photo Viewer". Use it, and you will get the same result as when manually editing the registry.

By default, in the new Windows 10, instead of the standard viewer (which was in Windows XP and 7), the Photos application (or in English "Photos") is used. On the one hand, it has somewhat richer functionality, but on the other hand, it is not so convenient (and requires getting used to 👀).

How to return the default viewer
First you need to open the settings of Windows 10 (you can use the link in START, or a combination of buttons Win + i).
After that, go to the section "Default Apps" , find subtitle "Photo Viewer" and click on the select button... (see the screenshot below for an example).
Important! If you do not have the "Windows Photo Viewer" item in the application selection list, you need to add some parameters to the registry. You can do this with a special file - (zipped with WinRAR).
Now, if you double-click on any of the photos, it should automatically open in the good old viewer (as in the example below).
I can't help but notice that some file formats (mostly less common) may continue to open in the app "Photo" . To fix this, right-click on such a file and open it properties .
After setting such settings, all files of the same format will be opened in the selected application.

By the way, in my humble opinion, it is much better to use a special viewer, for example, ACDSee, to work with pictures and photos.
