The latter in our country is in charge of one of the largest monopolists, Russian Railways (actually OJSC Russian Railways).

It is on his website that you can find and reserve an electronic ticket for any available destination. This is not difficult to do and, judging by the fact that you are reading the article on ticket refund, you have successfully completed this step earlier.

But something went wrong: you fell ill, an unexpected and urgent job appeared, and finally you just changed your mind - and now, in order not to lose the entire amount, you need to return the electronic ticket to the company, having received at least partial compensation. How to do this will be described next.

Important! Several main principles of Russian Railways regarding the return of tickets for trains of any direction:

  • if the document was purchased at the box office of the railway station or Russian Railways (for cash), then you can only get a part of the amount back in cash, at the same box office. The ticket must be returned in full safety;
  • If electronic document was purchased by bank transfer (currently only one payment option is possible - from a bank card), the money for the return will be transferred to the same card;
  • cash for a returned ticket is issued immediately, and a transfer to a card can take up to 30 days. If after this time the money has not arrived, you should apply to the bank that issued the card;
  • immediately after the return procedure is completed, the ticket is again available for free sale on the Russian Railways website, and anyone can buy it.

As already mentioned, for the returned document you will receive only a part of the money spent, the initial amount will decrease due to:

  • a fine, the amount of which is determined by the carrier depending on the return period: the earlier you are going to return an electronic (or regular) ticket, the more compensation you will receive, however, you should not count on 100% anyway;
  • a fixed refund fee charged on each “rejected” ticket: in 2018, its amount is 192 rubles 70 kopecks.

Note! It is best to return the ticket to the box office at least 8 hours before the departure time indicated on it: then you will be refunded its full price, except for the indicated commission. If the return was made at least two hours in advance, you will receive 50% compensation for the fare and the reserved seat. For electronic tickets, which we will talk about, the rules are a little softer: they can be canceled no later than 60 minutes before departure from your station.

For example, if you have purchased a travel document for a train going from Moscow to Vladivostok, but your point of departure is, for example, Kazan, you have the right to return the ticket and get back part of the money spent no later than one hour before the departure of the train from Moscow . The conditions are undeniably unfair, but are unlikely to change any time soon.

Find the ticket you need (if there are several orders in your personal account, you can use the convenient universal search form) and left-click on the "Request e-ticket status" button.

Immediately upon processing the request by the service, the inscription on the button will change to another one - "Update the status of the electronic ticket". And just below there will be another button - "Issue a refund". You need it, you can safely click on it.
