Samsung Galaxy J1 is a basic-level smartphone. The small device has a 4.3-inch display and therefore does not follow the current trend of increasing screen sizes. But Samsung hasn't been very generous with the rest of the components either. Is the phone able to withstand strong competition?

The Samsung J1 smartphone costs 109 euros ($ 122) and is one of the cheapest devices in the Galaxy series. This also becomes apparent upon closer examination of its components, since the buyer only gets standard parts: a 4.3-inch TFT display with 800x480 resolution, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 512 MB of RAM and only 4 GB of permanent memory. At least the manufacturer has integrated some of the features that are missing from its flagship models. The Galaxy J1's battery can be easily swapped out, and storage capacity can be expanded using a micro SD card.

The competition in this price segment is quite tough, which is why the devices are getting better and better. The closest rivals of the model are Motorola Moto E (2015), Nokia Lumia 535 and Honor Holly. LG L Fino and Huawei Y540 also compete with it.

Frame

The Galaxy J1 uses an old design that makes it easily recognizable as a Samsung smartphone. The corners of the polycarbonate case are rounded, along the upper edge there is a chrome strip, and under the display is the central Home button, on both sides of which there are a pair of touch buttons. This means that the J1 is basically no different from the more expensive Galaxy smartphones, which speaks in its favor given the low price. The back cover can be removed to access the removable battery, micro SIM slot, and micro SD card tray.

The compared models have large displays, which is clearly noticeable at one glance at their dimensions. Weighing just 122g, the Galaxy J1 is comfortable to hold in one hand, and the 4.3-inch form factor is quite good for medium-sized hands. The 8.8mm thickness is also one of the best, but the camera module protrudes slightly from the back. The compactness contributes to stability, the smartphone cannot be bent (no squeak), and the applied pressure does not damage the case. The good impression is spoiled somewhat by the slightly wobbly hardware buttons on the sides. However, considering the price, the overall experience is very good. True, despite the sturdy construction, users still recommend buying covers for Samsung J1.

Connectors

The Galaxy J1 has no surprises in terms of ports. The micro USB connector can be used to charge a smartphone and to transfer files from a PC, but it only supports the USB 2.0 standard. Neither MHL nor Miracast is available, which means that it is not possible to transfer images to the TV screen. This also applies to DLNA - only Wi-Fi-Direct is supported, which allows you to exchange files between two devices. There is also no USB-OTG cable for connecting USB devices (such as flash drives) to a smartphone.

The storage capacity is only 4GB and Samsung advertises 2GB of free space. However, the owners report that the memory available in the Samsung J1 is limited to 1.1 GB, so its expansion via microSD (up to 128 GB) is mandatory. Apps can be transferred to an SD card, but cannot be directly installed there. This presents an insurmountable problem for large programs such as games, for example.

Another feature of the smartphone is a built-in FM radio that works when a headset is connected, which acts as an antenna. However, the included headphones can only be used for making calls, as their quality is mediocre and listening to music will not be pleasant.

Software

Operating system Samsung Galaxy J1 - Android KitKat 4.4.4. The owner also has a Touch Wiz interface. It's simple enough that even inexperienced users shouldn't experience any problems with the software. In addition to some adware apps that can be removed, there is a Galaxy Apps store.

Samsung has added two more things. Firstly, it is now possible to take selfies using a gesture (which, however, does not always work). There is also the familiar power-saving mode, which leaves only the basic functions of the smartphone and allows you to significantly increase the operating time, even when the battery is very low.

Communication and geolocation

Communication modules confirm the low cost of the device, since the smartphone does not support LTE, AC-Wi-Fi, or NFC. Instead, there is dual-band UMTS, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n at 2.4 GHz. At least Wi-Fi does not remind of itself, since there are no breaks in the connection, and the signal quality remains good. Bluetooth 4.0 is also available and makes it easy to connect to an external speaker.

In the mobile network, the situation is radically different. The signal strength mark shows 1-2 bars in the city, and mobile data rates are not ideal (often only EDGE without 3G). During a conversation, the connection is stable, without interruptions.

The position of the smartphone can be determined using A-GPS and GLONASS. Indoors, this function does not work, and outdoors, geolocation takes about 40 seconds. Comparison with the professional Garmin GPSMAP 64s navigation device gives measurement accuracy within 8m.

Voice quality

The center keypad phone app is very easy to use. The numbers entered can be saved directly as a contact and the device shows the corresponding contact if the number is already stored or dialed before. There are four tabs at the top of the screen - dialer, call history, favorites and contacts. Working with the program will not cause problems.

The voice quality of the Samsung J1 phone is called unsatisfactory by user reviews. Obviously, this depends on the characteristics of the signal, but the sound is distorted on both sides. However, there is no annoying background noise (crackling). The microphone is not filtering out wind noise correctly. Although the speakerphone works, its quality is poor. The voice sounds dull and rattles when the smartphone is on the table, because the speaker is on the back next to the camera.

The performance of both cameras of the Samsung J1 phone is called unsatisfactory by the reviews. After pressing the shutter button, you have to hold the smartphone still for about 1 second until the moment when the picture is taken. Image processing takes another 2-3 seconds. In addition to automatic, there are panoramic, burst, night and sports shooting modes. You can also manually adjust several settings such as shutter speed, ISO value, and white balance.

Videos can be recorded in HD (1280 x 720) at 30 fps. The quality is comparatively good in well-lit rooms and fast movements are not an issue. However, the image quickly becomes too noisy in dim light. The video is saved in MP4 format.

The smartphone kit includes a battery, a power adapter with a USB cable, a separate USB data cable, a quick start guide and warranty information for Samsung J1, instructions and a headset. The digital row at the top is convenient, which can be called up with a long press. This means that you do not need to switch to another mode. The keys are limited in portrait mode due to the relatively small size of the display, and those with larger hands may have problems with typing errors. The situation is much better in landscape mode as the keys increase in size. On-screen input is possible, but first you need to activate this function in the settings. You can install other keyboards from the Play Store.

The touchscreen glides well and is reasonably responsive in peripheral areas, but input is not always fast. These small interruptions are annoying, sometimes severe. The OS runs pretty smoothly, but stutters when invoking the keyboard.

Screen

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy J1 with a glossy 4.3-inch TFT display. Although its resolution is only 800 x 480, the relatively small screen provides a sufficient pixel density of 217 dpi. Samsung J1, whose display characteristics are lower than those of competitors, is not inferior to them in usability. It is no longer standard for inexpensive phones - there are devices with HD resolution in this price range (for example, the Honor Holly). There is no light sensor that automatically adjusts the screen brightness.

The average luminous flux of the display is 364 cd / m2. The image is very smooth and matches with a good 95% brightness distribution. This is an average result. For example, the Huawei Y540 is 30% brighter. But it is possible to increase the brightness to 435 cd / m2 for 15 minutes, which can help in bright conditions.

The black level is quite high (0.63 cd / m2), resulting in a contrast ratio of 587: 1. With the exception of the Motorola Moto E, the competition has similar specs. The screen is unable to reproduce truly deep blacks, and colors lack saturation.

Further measurements with CalMAN software show decent results for such an inexpensive device. The gray levels show a fairly high deviation of the 2000 Delta E average (7.28) compared to sRGB, but this is an average result. There is a color shift towards blue, but in practice it is not noticeable.

Outside the room, the brightness of the Samsung J1 screen is considered satisfactory. The problem is its glossy surface. It is impossible to see anything in direct sunlight, but glare can also affect the image quality in the shade, and even increased brightness will not be able to help. However, if you are careful enough, the Galaxy J1 can be used outdoors.

The viewing angles of the TFT display are not bad, even a few people can see its contents. There is a slight loss in brightness when viewed from above or below, but glare is far more of a concern.

Performance

The Samsung J1 smartphone is equipped with a Spreadtrum SC8830 chip with two Cortex A7 cores and a clock speed of 1.2 GHz, which is supported by 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of ROM and a Mali-400 MP2 graphics processor. There is no reason to expect records, but the phone is inferior to its competitors in almost all respects. The GPU also falls short of expectations. For example, Honor Holly with the same GPU in the 3DMark benchmark was 40% faster. Galaxy J1 lags behind other devices with Mali-400 MP2 by at least 30%. The memory capacity of the Samsung J1 phone is said to be insufficient to run tests such as GFXBench, AnTuTu and 3DMark Ice Storm. The situation is not much better in browser tests either. While the Galaxy J1 doesn't always make it to the bottom notch of the rankings, the competition is proving better performance can be expected even in this price range. Overall, the performance test results are unsatisfactory. There are frequent delays and it takes some time for applications to launch.

In March 2016, Samsung J1 mini was released with improved features. The number of cores has grown to four, the amount of RAM - up to 768 MB, and ROM - up to 8 GB.

Games

Low test results lead to the conclusion that the Samsung Galaxy J1 is far from the best gaming smartphone. Even fairly simple games like Fieldrunners 2 are experiencing delays with a few units already, Angry Birds Star Wars also struggles. The touchscreen, however, functions normally, as does the accelerometer. Limited storage options are a big problem for games. Apps cannot be installed directly to the memory card, so large games such as Asphalt 8 (about 1.5 GB) cannot be recorded at all.

Temperature regime

The temperature rise is negligible. The most heated places under load are limited to the top of the smartphone, next to the camera. However, even the maximum temperature value is not critical (38 ° C). In other cases, the device simply becomes lukewarm, and at rest, no changes are felt.

Sound output

The position of the small speaker next to the camera on the back is not ideal as it can be easily blocked. At least it's loud enough, but the sound quality won't impress everyone. In general, the sound is shifted towards high frequencies, and the bass is completely absent. Users love playback through the 3.5mm stereo jack, but not through the included headset. The maximum headphone volume is more than sufficient. It is not difficult to connect your Samsung J1 phone to an external Bluetooth speaker. The connection is stable, without interruptions and delays. YouTube videos play in sync and much better than the built-in speaker.

Battery life

Rechargeable Li-ion battery with a capacity of 7.13 Wh. smartphone "Samsung J1", the power consumption characteristics of which are quite low, ensures long-term operation of the device. The practical Wi-Fi test showed almost 11 hours of battery life. Neither competitor achieves this result. Galaxy J1 also has an edge in all other scenarios. It takes about three hours to fully charge the battery when the device is turned on.

Verdict

The Samsung J1 phone makes a good impression in many important areas. The chassis is very solid and does not differ from the more expensive Galaxy models. The back cover is removable, revealing a micro-SD slot and a removable battery. It is worth noting the low power consumption and excellent battery life. However, the performance of the smartphone is mediocre. It lacks stability, the signal quality is not very good, and the telephone connection needs to be improved in terms of sound. The main camera takes decent pictures in good lighting. The display raises no objections. However, many competitors have better performance and resolution.

The J line in the Samsung classification belongs to the entry level, while in it you can find both the most inexpensive models and devices worth 20,000 rubles, which close the line from the top. Such a range of prices could not but affect the difference between the models, the conditional backbone of the line, which is ideologically united, can be considered J3 / J5 / J7, these three models coincide with similar lines above, for example, with the A-series.

Usually the J-series looked like simpler models compared to the A-series, for those who do not need advanced functions, but want to buy a smartphone from a large manufacturer, and not a Chinese company with an obscure history and incomprehensible service. The J-series loses a head-on comparison with Chinese devices, since it was not optimal in terms of price / quality ratio, you could find a fairly large number of interesting models for comparable money. In the 2017 lineup, Samsung has narrowed that gap. With the J3 model, a truly detective story came out, initially for Russia they announced the cost of this device at 9,990 rubles, which was less than for the model of the previous season. It was this price that was in the press release and everywhere, everywhere, the company denied that it was some kind of mistake, they said that they wanted to win a large market share. In fact, everything turned out to be wrong, and the device went on sale for 12,990 rubles, which makes the model not so attractive.

Another problem is the original plan, in which this device had a SuperAMOLED screen, like the older models. In most countries of the world, this device is equipped with a TFT screen, but the company insisted that there will be a more expensive matrix. This also did not happen, since the model entered the market with completely different screen characteristics, it is an inexpensive TFT display. In total, it turned out that they wanted the best, but in fact it turned out not very nice and good.

Considering that there are a huge number of good Chinese in this price segment, for example, from Huawei, Meizu, Xiaomi, and even more so from smaller companies, this device does not seem to be the strongest offer, which is overrated and is clearly not optimal for most buyers. On the other hand, this model has the lowest price for a smartphone from Samsung with a design in a metal case that looks similar to the older models.

Design, dimensions, controls

All J-series models are available in four colors - black, blue, gold and pink. There are no pink devices in Russia, it is possible that they will appear later.

In my opinion, both black, the usual color, and blue, which is the most interesting, look good. Gold and pink are definitely suitable for girls who are greedy for such color schemes.

Unlike the older models, the case is metal here, but the antenna inserts are made much simpler, they have somewhat saved on design, they are clearly visible and catch the eye. Unfortunately, the savings were not limited to this, the model does not have a fingerprint sensor, and there are no other sensors, for example, a penny light sensor, which automatically adjusts the screen brightness to external conditions. So I imagine the marketers that they were racking their brains about what to throw out of the device so as not to make it a competitor to their own models, as if there are no other manufacturers on the market who add these simple functions to their devices.

There is a physical key on the front panel, two touch buttons on the sides, but they do not have a backlight. The phone measures 143.2x70.3x8.2 mm and weighs 142 grams; it is quite compact and fits well in the hand.

On the front panel you can see the camera and the flash for it. On the left side there are two volume keys, but on the right side there is an on / off button, a little higher - a speaker hole for playing a ringtone and music. Such an unusual arrangement of the loudspeaker does not cause any problems, although the device is not the most vociferous, it has average ringer volume.

At the bottom you can see a 3.5 mm jack and a microUSB connector for charging. The build quality of the device is excellent, there can be no complaints. There are also two slots on the left side - one for one nanoSIM card, and the second holds both the second nanoSIM and a memory card.

Display

A regular TFT screen with HD resolution, no automatic brightness control, but there is an "Outdoor" mode, which maximizes the brightness, and the screen becomes readable in the sun. The duration of this mode is up to 15 minutes, then the screen returns to the previous value, since in this mode it consumes too much energy.

To evaluate the model with a TFT screen, I took one in retail, the difference with the prototype on the AMOLED screen is noticeable, and it is not in favor of the TFT model. In general, the screen on the J3 2017 can be called typical for the segment up to 10,000 rubles, but not higher. This is an average matrix in all characteristics, it remains readable in the sun, but that's all.

The screen has no special settings, everything is ascetic. This model is the weakest of the three devices in the series that came out at the same time.

Battery

Capacity 2400 mAh Li-Ion, battery life in LTE / Wi-Fi - up to 14 hours, video playback - up to 18 hours, talk time - up to 15 hours (3G). The lack of wireless charging is not critical, but I would like to get fast charging, but this is not. Charging time is about 2.5 hours.

In terms of operating time, I liked this device, taking into account the scenario of how to use it. If you mainly plan to make calls, rarely surf the net, reply to messages in instant messengers, then this is an ideal model for you, it will work for 3-5 days without any difficulty. But for those who are online without interruption, this smartphone will not work, its operating time will be up to one day, and even then not at the highest load. Strange, but even the screen does not have such an effect on the operating time, it is more of a data transfer, it just eats up the battery before our eyes. So, a couple of hours of navigating the roads of a small island, and I wasted a quarter of my battery. It is sad.

Chipset, memory, performance

The chipset in this device is Exynos 7570, it has 4 cores with a frequency of up to 1.4 GHz. The performance for ordinary tasks is enough for the eyes, the interface is responsive and quite fast (not like the flagships, but everything works fine in its segment, there are no complaints). The device has 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of built-in memory (initially available 10 GB). In my opinion, 2 GB of RAM is more than enough for this segment and scenarios.

Memory cards up to 256 GB, and there are no restrictions on a memory card and two SIM cards, this is important.

Look at the synthetic test results, they are typical for such a device.

Camera

The front camera is 5 megapixels, but it does not have autofocus, but there is a flash and a bunch of modes in order to take a selfie or decorate your face with some kind of picture. Some will like it, some will not, but the clear emphasis on these possibilities shows that there will be many young people among the users of the device.

The main camera has a resolution of 13 megapixels, it has autofocus. The quality of the shots in sufficient light is good, but nothing outstanding. Moreover, the camera module is already in the J5, and it gives good pictures. Here the camera can be compared with many Chinese in this segment, which means that this is average quality in the most favorable scenario.

Communication capabilities

The budget is manifested in the fact that Wi-Fi is single-band, and this is a minus, nevertheless, given the congestion of the air, I would like to get two bands. No ANT +, no NFC, and Bluetooth version 4.2. But the work of GPS is standard and does not raise any questions, but it is very voracious to the battery, this is not observed on older models.

Software

The model was released on Android 7.0.1, but many interface elements are similar to what we see in Android 7 and Clean UI on S7 / S7 EDGE. I advise you to read about what has appeared in Android 7, as this model will soon receive this version of the OS.

Unlike the top models, there is a built-in FM radio here, which looks like a nice bonus.

When using KNOX, you can install any program in duplicate, for example, install two WhatsApp messengers on one device and use them for each SIM card (two numbers, two messengers). You can even correspond with yourself. Exactly the same trick can be done with any software, no phone allows you to simultaneously work with two messengers on one device with different numbers. Today many Chinese manufacturers offer something similar in their smartphones, but the implementation is different everywhere.

Impressions

The vibration alert is average, the ring volume is also average - perhaps, I would like to have more headroom, but you can still hear the phone and feel it in your pockets when vibrating. Rather, there is no volume reserve, but here who will perceive this moment, the device cannot be called quiet.

This model is considered the opening one in the series, it goes up to J5 and J7, while being as close as possible diagonally to the J5, which costs 17,990 rubles. The devices are fundamentally different, and the J3 looks much cheaper, and its characteristics are worse. This model has only one advantage - an appearance that resembles older models, and even if you do not look in detail. The fact that there is a usual TFT screen here is nothing remarkable in performance, the operating time is optimized for those who only call and write from time to time, can be interpreted in different ways. This is far from a universal solution, but rather an excellent phone for those who make a lot of calls, but do not spend hours on the Internet.

I really liked the 2017 J7, but these models cannot even be compared with each other (the difference in cost, and the diagonal of the screen), but ideologically the older device is more interesting. In the described segment there are a huge number of decent devices, the first to come to mind is the Huawei P9 Lite, in the company's store it costs 13,990 rubles (complete with a selfie stick and a pedometer, there are additional discounts for store subscribers). The advantages of this device are obvious - FullHD-screen, better camera, more battery capacity, it is here 3000 mAh, the presence of a fingerprint scanner. But the plastic case.

There is also the Meizu M5s on the market, which also has a fingerprint sensor, a fairly powerful chipset from MediaTek and a choice of internal memory between 16 and 32 GB (memory cards are present). In general, this is a fairly typical solution for the Chinese, the price starts from 11,990 rubles in Russia.

As you can see, there is a huge supply on the market in this segment, and against this background, the 2017 J3 is lost, it does not look like a model that matches its price. Among the advantages are the Samsung brand, which attracts customers, and the markup for the brand. But the price / quality ratio is far from ideal.

An ambiguous representative of the budget category of devices is the Samsung Galaxy J1 mini smartphone. Reviews, of course, contain useful information about the use of the device, but first it is worth saying a few words about the brand and positioning itself.

It is worth noting that Samsung managed to gain the leading position in the smartphone market by releasing high-quality devices at an affordable price. Now the situation has changed somewhat. Budget devices are sold at overpriced prices, while their characteristics leave much to be desired. The expectation is that loyal customers will be willing to pay for the brand.

Nevertheless, the "first-born" of this line, considered in this article, showed itself not from the best side, if we talk about technical characteristics. In theory, this smartphone was supposed to become a model of what devices a famous brand should produce. When choosing a smartphone, most users primarily pay attention to design, not reviews. Samsung Galaxy J1 is a representative of a budget line, and, as you know, manufacturers do not pay close attention to the design of such products. The appearance of the device is quite typical for the Samsung trademark. The device is assembled from high quality smooth plastic. Speaking about the appearance of the smartphone, one cannot but mention the peculiarities of the colors. The plastic is not quite matte, but has a pearlescent tint, borrowed from the A and E series. But all this beauty, most likely, will have to be hidden under a protective case, otherwise the device will not keep its presentation for a long time. The thickness of the device is 8.9 mm. Moreover, its weight is 122 grams. This is a pretty decent figure, but not minimal, given the dimensions of the gadget. However, the phone is quite comfortable in the hand.
