Design and body

Externally, the new iPad Pro 12.9 is virtually identical to its predecessor. The body of the tablet, as before, is made of aluminum. In general, it is quite tough. However, pressing firmly on the back cover results in a slight distortion on the display. Also, do not try to bend the "big" apple tablet. Judging by the videos on the net, its body is not very good at resisting bending.

The location of the main modules and control keys has also been preserved. On the front panel, in addition to an impressive 12.9-inch display, there is a 7-megapixel front camera peephole and a Home button with an even faster fingerprint scanner.

The main camera has changed even more. The new 12-megapixel module has hardware image stabilization, supports video recording in 4K resolution at up to 30 frames per second, FullHD at up to 60 frames and HD at up to 240 frames per second.

As for the pictures, they are quite high quality. Of course, the photos taken on the iPad Pro 12.9 (2017), in some respects, are inferior to the pictures from the new flagship smartphones. But overall, Apple's new 12.9-inch tablet is doing great. Especially when you consider that such devices are not very suitable for taking photos.

Sound

If we talk about the indicators of autonomy, then when watching FullHD-video, the full charge of the built-in battery lasts about 11 hours, in reading mode with minimum brightness the tablet “lives” for about 26 hours, and games “eat up” the battery in 5 hours.

However, it was not without its drawbacks. Like other Apple devices, iPad Pro 12.9 (2017) does not have fast charging, and the included charger replenishes the battery very slowly. It takes over 5 hours to charge from 0 to 100%. It is possible that the situation can be corrected with a more powerful charger. But if you believe the reviews on the network, this does not greatly affect the state of affairs. In this case, the "cube" of charging and the device itself noticeably heat up.

Operating system

As mentioned above, at this stage, the iPad with the Pro prefix is ​​not able to completely replace a full-fledged laptop. This is primarily due to some limitations of the operating system.

Everything you want to see on a huge touchscreen is at your fingertips, and while it takes a while to get used to these fundamental Control Center changes, the solution is easier than dealing with these three-menu controls and an expanded multitasking screen.

The final iOS 11 update introduces an option for the iPad that deserves special attention - an improved on-screen keyboard. We still prefer the physical Smart Keyboard to the on-screen keyboard. IOS 11 software suite gets a ton of interesting changes, including a new system cloud storage, which we found handy during the review of the iPad Pro 12.9 (2017), but are not ready to entrust all our files to it (this will take time). However, we didn't notice a significant performance hit on the older iPad Pro 12.9 and iPad Pro 9.7, even though they lacked ProMotion technology.

Lab tests returned a multi-core score of 9343, which is consistent with many of the laptops we test. Apple's tablet price seems high until you realize that the original computing power of the new iPad Pro (2017) tablets matches that of a computer.

Camera

Battery life

iPad Pro 12.9 is rated for 10 hours of battery life thanks to its 10.875mAh battery, which is exactly what you get in everyday use. In fact, we could stream (at medium brightness + Wi-Fi) an entire TV series (10 episodes of 45 minutes each) without breaking the 75% battery threshold. We decided not to cover the remaining battery for the second season.

Our synthetic tests confirmed these readings even when we cranked up the screen brightness to a full 600 nits: watching a 90-minute HD video loop at full brightness made the battery lose only 21%. The iPad Pro 12.9 (2017) lasted longer than our MacBooks and MacBook Pros, although our tasks weren't nearly as intense on the iPad, which should be considered.

One of the best features of the iPad Pro 12.9 from two years ago is back: the ability to quickly charge with a USB to Lightning cable and USB-C charger. Before moving on to testing and discussing the characteristics of the device, we note that this is the first update to the iPad Pro 12.9 ″, and it appeared more than a year and a half after the release of the first version. Let's see how big the change is.

The table very clearly shows that the difference between the two new iPads is only in display size / resolution, case size / weight and battery capacity. And the new iPad Pro 12.9 ″ differs from its immediate predecessor in the used SoC and, again, in the battery capacity. The rest of the characteristics are identical.

And how it is in reality and how big the noted difference is from the point of view of practical use, we will now figure it out.

Packaging and equipment

The iPad Pro packaging is traditional for Apple tablets and practically does not differ from the packaging of previous generations of tablets. With one exception: a huge (almost the entire frontal surface of the box) bright color picture attracts attention and by the style itself strongly contrasts with the usual minimalistic image. We noted the same in the case of the iPad Pro 10.5.

As for the package bundle, there are no surprises here either: flyers, a charger, a Lightning cable (to be honest, it seems short), stickers and a key for removing the SIM-card cradle. The charger has the same power output as the previous generation iPad Pro 12.9 ″ and iPad Pro 10.5 ″: 12W (2.4A, 5.2V).

Design and accessories

The design of the new iPad Pro 12.9 ″ is almost identical to the previous model - the very first iPad Pro. Moreover, if the iPad Pro 10.5 ″ had still one significant difference from the iPad Pro 9.7 ″ - the increased screen diagonal and the changed ratio of the screen area and the entire outer surface, then the older model has everything the same.

In fact, this is the same body. At least, its dimensions coincide with an accuracy of a tenth of a millimeter. And those minor changes that exist can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

First, the speaker cuts have changed slightly. It is unlikely that this has a strong effect on the sound, at least we did not feel significant changes, but the fact itself indicates that some cosmetic changes in the arrangement of components inside the case were nevertheless made.

Another change is to move the microphone to the center of the top edge. By the way, we noted the same in the iPad Pro 10.5 ″. Finally, the third and final innovation is the appearance of a flash under the camera, as well as a change in the camera eye - it now protrudes above the surface, like in the iPhone. Whether it is good or not is up to users to decide. But here it should be borne in mind that the camera itself has been improved. And how strong - we will tell in the corresponding section of the article.

In general, we can say that the design has remained the same. And, on the one hand, why not, it is quite successful. But, on the other hand, in a year and seven months I would like some kind of progress - even the same as in the case of the younger model.

As if in compensation for the lack of design changes, Apple offered iPad Pro owners brand new accessories. This is a leather sleeve for your tablet and Apple Pencil, as well as a separate sleeve for the stylus. We received both accessories for testing and were able to get to know them,

The case is made of genuine leather. On the back side, the texture is smooth, on the front side - a little more rough, with a more pronounced skin pattern. There is a soft coating inside the cover. The case is available in three colors: navy blue, brown and black.

The tablet is lowered into the cover from above, and next to it, the stylus is fixed in a special recess (it is inserted into it from the side). Thus, Apple solved one of the main problems with the stylus: there was nowhere to put it when using the iPad outside the home. Do not carry the original box with you! Plus, the stylus could get scratched in the bag or lose its cap. Now a way has been found.

An important point: the tablet can be inserted into a new case-case both "naked" and in the Smart Cover or Smart Keyboard. In the latter case, he enters with a fair amount of effort, and in the end looks a little crowded, but in principle, this is also quite a working option. Of course, if the iPad Pro is just a Smart Cover, then it fits into the case without any problems.

Note that the case looks presentable. Not that he directly admired and seemed to be something elite, but it is just a beautiful, neutral in terms of style and convenient accessory in everyday use.

And another new accessory is a leather case for the stylus. It makes sense to buy it for those who often use the Apple Pencil outside the home, but do not want to buy a new case and are content, for example, with the iPad protection provided by the Smart Keyboard or Smart Cover.

Another thing is that the carrier for the stylus, naturally, does not solve the problem of possible loss (it is clear that when the stylus is dangling somewhere in the bag separately from the tablet, the risk is greater than when they are fixed in a single accessory). But there really is someone that.

As for the prices for new accessories - on the one hand, they are scary: almost 11,490 rubles for a case-case and 2,390 rubles for a case for a stylus can dampen enthusiasm. But on the other hand, genuine leather straps for Apple Watch cost about 12,000 rubles, and much less leather is used there than in a case-case.

When you change generations of Apple devices, the question of compatibility with old accessories always arises. As we remember, for the iPad Pro 9.7 ″ and iPad Pro 12.9 ″, in addition to the standard case and Smart Cover (it is obvious that they will not fit for the new item due to the different size), there were two more accessories: Smart Keyboard cover and an Apple Pencil. So, we can be glad that they are compatible with the new generation. Apple Pencil - completely (i.e. no dedicated Apple Pencil for new iPads Pro will not be), and Smart Keyboard partially.

Partially, this means that when using Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro 9.7 ″ on iPad Pro 10.5 ″, you can type on the keyboard, but automatic unlocking will not work. For iPad Pro 10.5 ″, the manufacturer has released a new Smart Keyboard, so you should pay attention to this nuance when buying. In the case of iPad Pro 12.9 ″ and the corresponding Smart Keyboard, compatibility is complete.

Screen

iPad Pro has a 12.9-inch display with a 2732 x 2048 resolution. These are the same parameters as the first iPad Pro 12.9 ″. However, Apple has introduced a number of technologies into the screens of the new iPad Pro line that have not been previously presented. And our testing is designed to show how the innovations have impacted the feel and overall image quality.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are much better than that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply the Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the right - Nexus 7, on the left - iPad Pro 12.9, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the iPad Pro 12.9 is significantly darker (brightness in photos is 61 versus 119 for the Nexus 7). Note that the manufacturer claims a reflectivity of 1.8%. The doubling of reflected objects in the iPad Pro 12.9 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass-to-air) with greatly different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense ambient light, but their repair in case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, but still slightly worse than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are easier to remove, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of regular glass.

With manual brightness control and with the display of the white field on the whole screen, the maximum brightness value was about 510 cd / m², the minimum - 4 cd / m². At the same time, if you place the tablet under a bright light (20,000 lux or a little more), then the maximum brightness temporarily (as long as such conditions persist or before switching to standby and turning on again) increases to 615 cd / m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be good. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensors (they are located in the upper corners in portrait orientation, the readings of the one that gives the highest value are used). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases (with a slight hysteresis of steady-state values ​​for intermediate lighting conditions). The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider - with it the user sets the desired brightness level for the current conditions. If nothing is changed, then in complete darkness, the brightness drops to 3 cd / m2 (very dark), in an office lit with artificial light (about 550 lx), the screen brightness is set to 140 cd / m2 (acceptable), in a very bright environment (corresponds to outdoor lighting on a clear day, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) rises to 615 cd / m² (to the maximum, this is what you need). The result did not quite suit us, so in the dark we slightly moved the brightness slider to the right, and for the above three conditions we got 18, 120-150 and 615 cd / m² (ideal). It turns out that the automatic brightness control function works adequately, and it is possible to adjust the nature of the brightness change to the user's requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering either.

This tablet uses an IPS type matrix. The micrographs show the typical IPS subpixel structure:

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large gaze deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without tint inversion. For comparison, we present photographs in which the screens of the iPad Pro 12.9 and Nexus 7 display the same images, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2 (across the white field across the entire screen), and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. The color balance is slightly different, the color saturation is normal. Recall that the photograph can not serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of color reproduction and is provided only for a conditional visual illustration. In this case, apparently, due to the peculiarities of the radiation spectrum of the screen, the color balance in the photographs of the iPad Pro 12.9 screen is somewhat different from what is seen with the eye and is determined by the spectrophotometer. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens and the contrast remained at a high level. And white box:

The brightness at the angle of the screens decreased (at least 4-5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of iPad Pro 12.9, the drop in brightness is less. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened very weakly and takes on a purple tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is about the same!):

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 1300: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 24 ms (13 ms on + 11 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 37 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.21, which is very close to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve practically does not deviate from the power dependence:

Such spectra are (unfortunately) found in top-end mobile devices from Sony and other manufacturers. By all appearances, this screen uses LEDs with a blue emitter and a green and red phosphor (usually a blue emitter and a yellow phosphor), which, in combination with special matrix light filters, allows obtaining a wide color gamut. Yes, and in the red phosphor, apparently, the so-called quantum dots are used. For a consumer device, a wide color gamut is not an advantage, but a significant disadvantage, since as a result, the colors of images - drawings, photographs and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and there are the overwhelming majority of them) have an unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, such as skin tones. Unlike many well-known and not-so-famous companies at Apple, they know what the color gamut should be, and therefore they carefully adjust it to the sRGB borders. As a result, the colors visually have a natural saturation.

This applies to those images in which the sRGB profile is registered or no profile at all. However, the native to the top modern devices from Apple (at least for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Pro 9.7, MacBook Pro, etc.) is the color space Display P3 with slightly richer greens and reds. Space Display P3 based on SMPTE DCI-P3 but has a D65 white point and a gamma curve of approximately 2.2. In addition, the manufacturer claims that since iOS 9.3, color management is supported at the system level, which makes it easier for iOS applications to correctly display images with a prescribed color profile on the screen. Indeed, adding the Display P3 profile to the test images (JPG and PNG files), we got a color gamut wider than sRGB (output in Safari):

Note that the coordinates of the primary colors almost exactly coincided with those prescribed for the DCI-P3 standard. This coverage differs from Adobe RGB, red in Display P3 slightly more saturated, and green can be considered less saturated:

We look at the spectra in the case of test images with a profile Display P3:

It can be seen that in this case no cross-mixing of the components occurs, that is, this color space is native to the iPad Pro 12.9 screen. The most important question is whether support gives Display P3 at least some significant advantage, and doubts are primarily related to the fact that there is practically no content with coverage wider than sRGB, and when it appears, it is not a fact that it will be exactly in the version Display P3 and all current devices will be hopelessly outdated by that time. However, you have to start somewhere, and the wide screen coverage and the OS built-in color management contribute to this. In the meantime, the content can be created by the user himself, since in photos with iPhone cameras 7/7 Plus and this tablet, a profile is prescribed Display P3 however, we do not know about the real color gamut of these cameras.

The gray scale balance is good, as the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of the absolute black body (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. The change in values ​​from hue to hue indirectly indicates that software color correction is being used. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

The results of the tested model are almost identical to iPad Pro 10.5 ″ - the difference is no more than an error. Well, the superiority over older models is obvious and very significant.

Now let's see how the iPad Pro performs in Geekbench - a multi-platform benchmark that measures the performance of CPU and RAM, and from the fourth version, which we used in testing, also the computing power of the GPU. Plus, we haven't forgotten about the comprehensive AnTuTu Benchmark.

In a strange way, in AnTuTu, the 12.9-inch model yielded to the 10.5-inch model, but, firstly, only slightly, and secondly, it must be assumed that the fact is that 3D subtests here require more performance because of the higher screen resolution. Hence the difference. Otherwise, the results for both new products are almost identical, and the difference is at the level of error.

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to GPU performance testing. We used 3DMark, GFXBench Metal 3.1.5 and Basemark Metal.

Let's start with GFXBecnh. Recall that Offscreen tests are displaying a 1080p picture regardless of the actual screen resolution. And tests without Offscreen means displaying a picture exactly in the resolution that corresponds to the device's screen resolution. That is, Offscreen tests are indicative from the point of view of abstract SoC performance, and real tests - from the point of view of the comfort of the game on a specific device.

Here, in the Onscreen tests, the 12.9-inch model is expectedly inferior to the younger model - it's all about the screen resolution. But the relatively small difference with the first iPad Pro 12.9 ″ is no longer such a pleasant surprise.

In Sling Shot Extreme mode, the 12.9 ″ unexpectedly outperformed the 10.5 ″ tablet, and the gap is more than significant. But in Ice Storm Unlimited, everything is expected: the result is almost the same. And, of course, the iPad Pro of past generations is far behind.

Finally - Basemark Metal.

Again, no surprises. A clear victory for the Apple A10X Fusion in both new products.

The results of testing the iPad Pro 12.9 ″ in benchmarks once again confirmed: Apple A10X Fusion is the most productive Apple SoC to date. Well, we did not notice a significant difference in performance between the iPad Pro 12.9 ″ and the previously tested iPad Pro 10.5 ″ (except in Onscreen tests - not in favor of the larger model, but this is understandable).

Video playback

To test the display of video files on the screen of the device itself, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Methodology for testing video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"). Screenshots with an exposure of 1 s helped to determine the frame output behavior of video files with various parameters: the resolution varied (1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). with). In the tests, we used the Safari browser, from which we launched video files for playback using direct links and switched to full screen display. H.265 files could not be played. Here is an example shot in case of H.264, 4K, 50 fps:

It can be seen that the duration of the frames is slightly different. The manufacturer claims that this tablet has increased the refresh rate of the screen to 120 Hz, and when playing video files, the refresh rate adjusts to the frame rate in it. Indeed, in the case of video files with frequencies of 24, 25, 30 and 60 fps, the frame lengths are the same, but in the case of files with frequencies of 50 fps, this is not the case, and the image of the arrow on the test files jitters due to the variation in the frame duration.

Autonomous work and heating

We conducted detailed battery life tests on the iPad Pro 12.9 ″. Judging by them, the tablet is not only not inferior to its predecessor and the younger model of the line, but also surpasses them. However, with the exception of the reading mode, where the iPad Pro 10.5 ″ has a better result. This is probably due to the fact that the backlighting of a larger screen consumes more resources and, in the absence of other loads, this affects the battery life. Otherwise, the result is logical: iPad Pro 12.9 ″ has the largest battery capacity, and in conjunction with the energy-saving qualities of the Apple A10X Fusion, this gives excellent results.

Note that in addition to our standard tests, we decided to use the new product in everyday life - instead of the previous iPad Pro 12.9 ″. Of course, it is rather difficult to directly compare, since a tablet, unlike a smartphone, is not used constantly, but different scenarios and different duration from day to day naturally affect the result. However, according to subjective feelings, the tablet can live longer without charging. For example, in everyday use, involving a little 3D games, a little work with text in Pages, as well as web surfing, YouTube, correspondence in Mail and instant messengers - in general, a little bit of everything, the tablet worked for a week without recharging. In our opinion, an excellent result.

Below is a thermal image back surface obtained after three runs in a row (approximately 10 minutes of operation) of the Basemark Metal test:

Heating is localized slightly above the center of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 39 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), which is relatively little.

Work in LTE networks

The tablet will work in almost all LTE networks... That is, you can safely buy an iPad Pro in another country and at the same time be sure that with us it will be fully functional in terms of communication capabilities.

LTE reception is confident. Speed ​​measurements using the Speedtest.net iOS application (a Beeline SIM-card was used) showed normal results both for receiving data and for downloading. However, the results can be very operator dependent.

iPad supports hot-plug and SIM swap (no reboot), Apple's virtual SIM and all the latest LTE and Wi-Fi standards (LTE-Advanced, Wi-Fi 5 GHz 802.11ac). We did not notice any differences from other iPad Pro 12.9 ″ here.

Camera

Like the 10.5-inch model, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is equipped with two cameras - a 5-megapixel front and a 12-megapixel rear camera, as well as a flash. In addition to this, 4K 30fps video shooting and optical stabilization are supported.

We tested the main camera outdoors under real conditions.

The camera copes well with macro photography.

Sharping on wires is practically absent.

Car numbers are distinguishable.

Quite good work with shadows, although there are a lot of noise reduction artifacts on the asphalt.

Noise in the shadows is almost invisible.

Detailing in the background isn't too bad.

Good sharpness across the frame, although in some places there are small areas of blur.

Nothing special happened to the camera - it is, as before, good in the light, but in the shadows it gives the result a little worse. The detail for the tablet camera is quite decent, the software processing is moderate. Unless the areas of blur are still slightly upsetting. But otherwise the camera will handle a lot of scenes well.

4K video looks good even at 30 fps. Light ripples are visible, and everything else is compensated by good image stabilization. But the 1080p 60 fps mode is especially good, and here the stabilization significantly improves the image.

conclusions

The new iPad Pro 12.9 ″ evokes complex emotions. The almost complete absence of external changes is, of course, disappointing. A year and seven months is still a fairly long period for which I would like to see some step forward in a mobile device (not only in benchmarks). There is indeed an increase in productivity, and it is very significant, but, again, the operations in which it can be noticed have been missed once or twice. Finally, the updated camera, on the one hand, is much better, but on the other hand, it's still not a smartphone, hardly anyone will use the camera on a 12.9 ″ tablet regularly, except in some highly specialized situations ( for example, an artist can take a photo and immediately process it).

Perhaps the only quality of the new iPad Pro 12.9 ″ that will really delight all users is the increased battery life. Not to say that this parameter was bad in the previous model, but in the new item it is generally excellent. Nevertheless, the difference is not so great that you rush to change the previous iPad Pro 12.9 ″ for a new one. Perhaps, even if you have unlimited financial capabilities, the feasibility of replacing it seems questionable. This, however, cannot but please the owners of the first generation model: it is still relevant.

On the other hand, there is no reason not to buy a new product if you need a tablet with such a large screen diagonal, and you missed the first model, there is simply no reason. And, in general, there are real alternatives too.

In June, Apple introduced two impressive new iPad Pros: 10.5 "and 12.9". The name clearly indicates the first difference between them - the screen diagonal. How else these two ultra-powerful tablets differ, and which one is best to choose - we'll try to figure it out in our article, looking at the design and build quality, comparing the new features and technical specifications.

Design

The 10.5-inch Pro is a completely new "form factor" for Apple, which has never made a tablet this size before. The 12.9 "model is an upgrade from the 2015 12.9" Pro. But both devices have essentially the same design as the iPad Air 1 released in 2013.

Of course, aesthetics is subjective, and whether you like this design - everyone decides for himself.

Both Pro models have four speakers and deliver superior sound. Both models have a headphone jack and Smart Connector at the bottom left, which means they are compatible with Apple Pencil and their sized smart keyboards.

Screen

There is one major design change we see this year: the 10.5 "model has smaller bezels, which makes the display area about 18.3% larger compared to the 9.7" iPad Pro.

Both 2017 Pro models also receive a new ProMotion feature that dynamically adjusts the refresh rate (maximum refresh rate doubles to 120Hz). The new screens are also brighter, according to a claimed 600 nits.

As far as pixel density is concerned, there is no difference between this year's models and their predecessors, although the 10.5 ”model has a new screen size corresponding to the new resolution.

As for the main differences between the new iPad Pro from each other, they mainly concern only the size and resolution of the screen. Both models have the same specifications. Take a look for yourself:

Processor and memory

Both new iPad models The Pros come with the A10X Fusion processor, a modified version of the A10 Fusion chip in the iPhone 7.

It has three high-performance cores and three energy-efficient cores for improved battery life, as well as a twelve-core GPU.

Both tablets received second-generation Touch ID, which was previously only available on iPhones. It is faster and more reliable than the first generation ID.

Battery

And finally, one of the seemingly important differences: the 12.9 ”model has a larger battery capacity, which is natural, since it has a larger screen and a higher resolution. However, Cupertino assures that the battery life will be the same for both devices - 9-10 hours of operation.

Outcome

The Pro models released in late 2015 and early 2016 were annoyingly inconsistent — consumers rushing to purchase the first 12.9 "Pro were disappointed six months later when the 9.7" model came out with a better screen and cameras, extra colors and more storage. Plus, at a lower price. Apple hasn't made the same mistake this year and the two tablets are nearly identical.

In terms of processor, RAM, display technology and pixel density (albeit at different resolutions), as well as camera settings, storage capacity, and almost everything else, they are the same. Your choices come down to screen size, portability, and price.

To choose from these two tablets, it is worth deciding what screen size you need, as well as what size tablet is more suitable for you.

When it comes to price, this is the most painful part of the comparison.

Standard kit: tablet, Lightning cable, power adapter, waste paper. At first glance, the new iPad does not differ much from previous models, it is given out by thin bezels on the sides and an elongated (relative to the 9.7-inch model) front part.

All connectors and buttons are located in their usual places. Four speakers from 12.9- and 9.7-inch versions are also in place. It is noteworthy that, unlike the latest iPhones, Apple has left a 3.5mm headphone jack in the tablets. Like all Pro models, iPad Pro 10.5 ″ is equipped with a Smart connector for connecting accessories, primarily keyboards.

The tablet weighs the same as the previous 9.7-inch model. In general, it feels about the same, there is not much difference in ergonomics.

I have a version in gold: the front panel is white, and almost all of the back, with the exception of the bands for the cellular antenna, is painted gold. Apple hasn't radically changed the design of its tablets with the iPad Air - it's still the same thin plate of aluminum and glass. The design has caught on, but does not look outdated.

Screen

Compared to the 9.7-inch model, the display has become larger, but the dimensions remain almost the same. The screen occupies almost 80% of the front surface of the tablet, but it cannot be called frameless. It may seem so if you have a Space Gray color model, in other color schemes, where the screen has a black frame, there is no such effect.

I think that a tablet does not need to have a bezel-less screen, although this trend in smartphones is obvious, and Apple will soon introduce a new model with just such a solution. With a bezel-less screen on tablets, it is difficult to exclude accidental touches, and given the large working surface of the iPad, this is a very important point.

The screen itself is very nice. The colors are bright, saturated, the viewing angles are large, without yellowness, blueness and greenness. Pixels are not visible.

They say that the best screens are AMOLED, but with such an IPS you just don't know what to complain about.

The screen behaves well in the sun. And there is also a function of automatic adjustment to the color temperature of the environment, which works imperceptibly in the background. This is a handy and cool thing: you may not know about its existence, but the screen itself adapts to the lighting conditions.

The new iPad Pro uses Pro Motion technology on the screen. According to Apple, it provides a 120Hz refresh rate display. In practice, this means that everything works very smoothly, without jerking or tearing.

The difference is felt when flipping pages, scrolling (especially pages in Safari) and, of course, viewing photos and videos. For the latter, sound is critically important, and we'll talk about it.

Sound

As in the large 12.9-inch model, four speakers are installed here, which automatically adjust the sound depending on the position of the tablet: if you hold it vertically, the upper pairs of speakers work, if horizontally, then the lower ones.

A tablet will easily rock a small room. It's nice to watch a movie on it, listen to music too. The sound is loud enough, the quality for the speakers is excellent.

Unlike the latest iPhones, a 3.5mm jack is installed here, so you can connect your tablet to regular speakers or listen to music through your favorite headphones. I have tried using regular wired JBLs and wireless AirPods- works well with everyone.

Iron

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ has an A10X processor. It is likely to remain the most powerful mobile device on the market in 2017. There is no doubt that this performance will last for several years: buying an iPad Pro now, you can count on 3-4 years of work without serious performance problems. This lifespan is more typical for laptops than smartphones.

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ comes with 4GB of RAM. This helps not to reload applications in the background, quickly switch between them, and not to reload tabs in Safari.

There are models with and without LTE-module. I advise you to take the version with the module: you will be very mobile and will be able to work from almost anywhere. You can find tariff plans for tablets with unlimited Internet from Russian mobile operators, and then you will be in touch almost everywhere.

Of course, you can distribute the Internet to a tablet from a smartphone, but this is not at all the same, and besides, drain the battery of the latter faster.

Cameras

The cameras are the same as in the iPhone 7. You can shoot on the iPad, especially if you have a tripod, and even editing pictures is a pleasure. The front camera can be used for any relevant task: selfies, video calls, vlogs. It records video at 1,080p resolution. It's the same good quality as the iPhone 7.

Connection

I didn't notice any problems with Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. It always connects quickly and correctly, 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies are supported. The level of cellular signal reception depends solely on the operator and the coverage area; the tablet does not interfere with the connection.

The fingerprint scanner

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ has a Touch ID fingerprint scanner. It is built into the mechanical button - the same as before. Unlike a tablet, the latest iPhones do not have a physical button - pressing it mimics the Taptic Engine.

Software

An interesting feature of the iPad Pro 10.5 ″ is that in fact it was created for the new iOS 11 - it is she who maximizes the potential of the tablet. Output new version The OS is slated for September and has a lot of cool stuff. Apple believes that with their using iPad will be able to replace the computer for most users.

iOS 11 is due out on September 12, but the public beta is already available and works well on the iPad Pro 10.5 ″. I'll tell you about its features, which, according to Apple, should turn the tablet into a full-fledged replacement for a laptop:

1. New Dock. It accommodates more applications than before. In addition, the system offers three of the most commonly used programs. The Dock is always accessible by swiping from the bottom of the screen.

2. New multitasking window. IOS 11 introduces a new switching between apps screen, which also integrates a new Control Center with widgets for quick settings.

3. Opening applications over windows. On top of two already open applications that split the screen in half, you can add another window with the program.

4. Drag-n-drop. My all-time favorite feature: it helps you copy and paste text fragments, pictures and links between applications using simple drag and drop.

5. Quick Notes for Apple Pencil. In iOS 11, you can create quick notes by simply touching the tip of the stylus to the screen, and take quick sketches in Mail, Notes, and other applications.

6. Updated keyboard QuickType. By swiping down the keys, you can quickly insert some characters.

Memory

iPad Pro 10.5 ″ is available with three storage options: 64, 256 and 512 GB. I would not recommend going with the 64GB model: considering how much apps, games, music, photos and videos take up, that storage will quickly run out.

The best option is 256 GB. Here, the vast majority have enough room for both apps and content. 512 GB is a great option if you are going to use the tablet as your only work tool, work on it with all your files.

Battery survivability

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ has a 8134 mAh lithium polymer battery. Together with iOS, this gives 8-9 hours of work. The best results can be achieved by not using a cellular connection, lowering the screen brightness, and using the tablet only for viewing content.

But even 8-9 hours is an excellent result. This will be enough for a full day with a tablet, and by the evening will be left to watch a movie or two episodes of your favorite TV series.

Accessories

Increasing the screen to 10.5 inches and slightly increasing the height of the tablet allowed for a keyboard that can accommodate all the buttons. This prevents your fingers from piling up when you work behind it.

I don’t have the largest hands and fingers, so it’s quite possible that people with larger palms will have problems. Consider this and before buying, check whether it is convenient for you to type on such a keyboard.

The travel of the buttons is small, but distinct. Typing speed on a tablet is 80–85% of typing on a laptop.


Smart Keyboard replaces cover and stand

Many built-in and third-party applications support hotkeys, which is convenient. Some work at the system level: for example, you can quickly turn on search and return to the home screen.

Using a keyboard reduces the need to constantly poke at the screen, but does not eliminate it entirely. Some things, such as highlighting fragments of text, are more convenient to do on the screen than on the keyboard.

I would advise buying a keyboard for those whose work is related to writing large texts. If the most you write is a short note or post on Facebook, then use the software keyboard, that's enough.

Apple Pencil

At first I wanted to buy an Apple Pencil, but then I realized that I have practically no scripts when I need it. Yes, sometimes it is more convenient to use it to make some notes and sign documents, but I rarely do this and an ordinary finger and Multi-touch is enough.

I am not an artist, designer or illustrator. The most I do is edit photos in VSCO or Snapseed. If your work is not related to drawing, then I do not recommend taking a stylus.

Can iPad Pro replace a computer

I have been using iPad Pro for a month and a half, and here are the tasks in which it replaced my laptop:

1. Correspondence and calls. There are no problems here, all applications for instant messengers (Telegram, Facebook Messenger, Viber), e-mail (Mail, Spark, myMail, Outlook, AirMail) and calls (Skype, Zoom.us, Google Hangouts) are there. If your job is all about correspondence and negotiations, then the iPad Pro is for you.

3. Uncomplicated photo and video processing. There is no Final Cut Pro here, of course, but there are iMovie and other good video editors to help you make a normal video and put it on the Web. For personal video blogs and simple videos for social networks - just right.

4. Creation of sketches, drawings and sketches. The iPad Pro has some cool artist apps like Procreate, Adobe Sketch, and more. They allow you to create drawings and sketches.

5. Writing draft articles. I use the Ulysses and Notes apps to create a basic content and article. For example, at Ulysses I wrote a draft of this review and then transferred it to Google Docs.

6. Create simple documents, spreadsheets and presentations. There are several office suites for creating and editing documents, tables and on the iPad: iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google (“Docs”, “Sheets”). For example, I made two presentations for my talks right on the tablet using Keynote.

The functionality of these applications does not reach desktop clients, but it is enough to write a simple document, edit a spreadsheet and make a presentation.

7. Creation of outlines and mind maps. The large iPad Pro display makes it easy to structure information. I use OmniOutliner 2 when I want to break down an idea point by point and MindNode to do it.

The iPad Pro can replace a computer in many ways. It is suitable for people who communicate a lot with colleagues and partners at work and for whom it is important to show something on the tablet screen: presentations, sketches, drawings, drafts.

Also, iPad Pro will become an assistant for a wide range of professionals: editors, designers, editors, illustrators, photographers, bloggers. A tablet will not replace a laptop or computer with a full-fledged operating system, but it will be a good help: you can do rough work on the tablet, and finally finish it on the computer.

The potential to replace laptops with a tablet rests solely on applications. The tablet itself and the operating system allow you to use it for work. Of course, you can always launch Safari and use the web versions of the services, but that's not quite the case.

If you are considering the iPad as a replacement for a laptop, then write down all the work scenarios in which you need it, and see if there are applications for them. If yes - then feel free to take it, if not - wait a little.

Believing in the future is, of course, good, but if you need a working tool here and now, then carefully study if the iPad has the programs you need.

Another huge plus of the iPad Pro is that it is very compact and increases your portability. Let's just say that MacBooks are far from the most bulky devices, but the iPad Pro 10.5 ″ with a keyboard is lighter than any of them (even the MacBook 12 ″). You might think that 300-400 grams does not solve, but believe me, when you carry a laptop with you every day, the difference is felt.

In addition, iPad Pro with a keyboard can be easily laid out on a table in an Aeroexpress train or on an airplane. If you wish, you can work with the tablet on your knees, but then you should have a comfortable support so that your back does not hurt or get numb.

If you have a cellular module, then you can solve urgent small tasks at any time: fix something, call, send a letter to someone. In this regard, the laptop is not so mobile, it still needs Wi-Fi.

The iPad Pro 10.5 ″ itself is very light and feels weightless for its size. If you value portability, then you will love this model.

No weak points?

I've been using Apple technology for seven years now, and it's hard to surprise me with anything. But the iPad Pro succeeded. I haven't used such a solid device for a long time without weaknesses in all components: there are things that work better somewhere, but there is not a single Achilles heel.

With all that stuff in it, it's a perfect tablet. It cannot be said that it will definitely replace a laptop or computer for work: everything is too individual and depends on the tasks and applications that you need. If you have the appropriate tools for your work tasks, then you can bet on the iPad Pro - you will love it.

What is missing

1. 3D Touch. It's scary to imagine how the user experience would be transformed with this thing. It would replace the right click when using the application and would simplify a lot of things.

2. Moisture protection. To work with iPad by the pond without fear of dropping the tablet into the water.

3. Taptic Engine. It would be great to use it for responsive typing with a built-in soft keyboard.
