Installing apps on windows rt. Windows RT: launching desktop applications. Windows RT. How to download and is it possible

In a discussion of tablets, one reader claimed to have installed Windows 8 on an ASUS TF700T "transformer". The tale turned out to be beautiful - after all, the tablet has an ARM Cortex-A9 processor. However, Windows for ARM exists, and today we will talk about it.

In discussions about the new Microsoft OS, there is a popular stamp “Windows 8 for tablets”. To understand the superficiality of this judgment, it is enough to work in Windows 8 for a little more than a few days. Windows RT is just intended for tablets, but so far few people own devices running this OS.

Today on the program

The state of the tablet market

Tablets with Windows on board were produced even before the release of Windows 8, but their share was small. According to Strategy Analytics, in the third quarter of 2012, 17.2 million tablets were released, of which only 400,000 Windows control.

However, already in the first quarter of 2013, Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets accounted for 7.5% of total shipments. This is not the first time that Microsoft has been playing the role of a catch-up - the XBOX example shows that the company knows how to get out of holes. But fighting for a place in the sun in the tablet market is impossible without a finger-oriented operating system.

New Windows interface 8 is intended to fill this gap, and in parallel, Microsoft has taken another huge step - completely transferred new system to the ARM architecture.

Processor architecture: ARM vs. x86

Processors with Intel x86 architecture are installed in almost all modern laptops and desktop computers, while ARM dominates in smartphones and tablets. Look again at the chart above and add up the shares of Android and Apple. The heart of all these devices are chips built on the ARM architecture.

The main difference between Windows RT and Windows 8 is the processor architecture for which it was created operating system. Windows 8 is designed for x86/x64 processors and cannot be installed on computers with processors that use the ARM instruction set.

Microsoft created Windows RT specifically for the ARM architecture.

Windows RT was Microsoft's first OS to target the mass market of ARM-based devices. Microsoft has even shown its vision for these PCs by releasing the Surface RT tablet under its brand.

Note that the Windows 8 Pro tablet of the same name hit the market three months later. Thus, as if emphasizing that Windows came to the market of mobile PCs with ARM seriously and for a long time. This brings us to talking about what Windows RT has to offer.

Comparison table of Windows 8 editions

For a substantive conversation about the set Windows features RT needs to understand how exactly it differs from Windows 8. I have prepared a comparison table of Windows 8 editions for you.

Windows 8 Edition replaces the older Windows 7 Home Edition. Windows 8 Pro is aimed at small and medium businesses, while the Enterprise Edition is aimed at large organizations.

Apps from the store work in Windows environment Runtime or WinRT (hence the prefix RT in the OS name). WinRT is built into all editions of Windows 8, so store apps can be used on any PC. However, Windows RT only supports running applications designed for the WinRT environment.

Their range and functionality look pale in comparison to traditional applications. This feature of Windows RT makes the system unattractive to many users, giving rise to shortcuts like "stripped down Windows".

It is logical to assume that other companies will supply devices with a similar set of codecs. However, before buying a tablet, it makes sense to look at the specifications, keeping your media collection in mind.

Support for the H.264 codec by the operating system does not mean that Windows RT will be able to play HD video in MKV format out of the box. Since WMP and a modern player cannot handle this format, you will have to look for a suitable player in the store and probably pay for it.

Who needs Windows RT now

The dominance of ARM in tablets is due to a combination of factors:

  • passive cooling that promotes small, light and thin devices
  • good performance for the tasks assigned to the tablet
  • low power consumption resulting in long battery life

Another reason is that Intel simply didn't have a competitive x86 (read Windows) chip until the release of the Atom Z2760. With its advent and the release of Windows 8, we saw a whole scattering of various tablets with which it is not a shame to appear in public. But, paradoxically, the Z2760 made it almost pointless to buy Windows devices on ARM!

Dimensions, weight and battery life

Tablets running Windows 8 are quite comparable in performance to devices running Windows RT.

The example of ASUS shows that the company's tablet with Windows RT turned out to be lighter and thinner than its brother with Windows 8, but at the same time it is wider and taller than the Acer Iconia W5. ASUS claims 9 hours of 720p video playback for a Windows RT tablet, which is only half an hour more than a Windows 8 device.

Indeed, the battery life of Windows 8 tablets on the Z2760 and Windows RT tablets on ARM is quite comparable.

This follows not only from the characteristics declared by the manufacturers, but also from the publications of independent resources. For example, a long review was published on THG, and PC World pointed to the superiority of the Samsung Ativ tablet over the Surface RT and ASUS Vivo Tab RT in terms of battery life.

Price

A lower price might have fueled interest in Windows RT devices, but in reality, they can even be more expensive! For example, on the day this entry was published, an ASUS tablet with Windows 8 costs 8% less in M.video than with Windows RT in a similar configuration (64GB, 3G).

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft only sold 1.1 million Surface RT units in its first four months of sales, while Lenovo, Dell, and ASUS have already had to cut prices on Windows RT tablet models. Samsung generally refused to supply Ativ Tab to Europe, despite the fact that the model did not even reach the US market.

Conclusion

Due to the small difference in size/weight and battery life between ARM and Clover Trail tablets, the benefits of Windows RT devices to the consumer are not obvious (even assuming they are not more expensive). On one side of the scale lies the Office 2013 RT that few people need on a tablet, and on the other, the inability to run third-party desktop applications.

The situation may improve if Microsoft reduces the cost of licensing Windows RT for OEMs, who, for their part, also find reserves to reduce the price of devices. The only question is whether they need it.

I don’t even need a regular tablet, but RT, well, if only to have fun while traveling. No, well, if "God sends", I will not refuse RT either.

Anton

Vadim, they say that Microsoft was disappointed in its brainchild - Windows RT and it seems like it will not release kernel updates after the release of Windows Blue, so I see no reason to invest in something that will become obsolete in 5 years.

Tablets become morally obsolete in a year and a half, incl. not the essence of the future fate of the platform is important. Unless software developers will spend their time on it and some "hunger" of applications will be felt.

Well, the same Android is updated without problems, with Aipeds a little more difficult, but Windows - no, no, or will Windows Blue RT firmware come through WU?

    Xitroff

Is iOS more difficult to update than Android? :))) You made my day :)))

    Anton

Vadim Sterkin: Anton, what does “updating without problems” mean? If the OEM does not support the update, you are left with problems. If you are interested in solving them, this is your choice, but such consumers are in the minority.

Vadim, there are always problems, but for a handy IT specialist, they are solvable, aren't they? An ordinary user, if he wants, will take the device for repair (not necessarily authorized) and they will do it there.

Xitroff Q: Is iOS more difficult to update than Android? :))) You made my day :)))

IOS has a strictly defined list of supported devices, while Android is completely open to manipulation, it is not difficult to twist it with direct hands.

I have been eyeing the tablet market for a long time, but have not yet made a choice. The search for a suitable device is also complicated by the fact that I still do not see exactly “my” tablet in all the huge assortment. For me, many absolutely opposite factors are important at once: from screen resolution and weight, to the possibility of installing third-party applications and a set of ports. In general, there is a dream: to replace a laptop with a tablet with a docking station (keyboard case). But so far I don't see anything more interesting than http://www.kupaworld.com/products.php. And although the price is high, and I have not yet seen this miracle in the vastness of Russia, I think that a device of such a plan may well replace an ordinary laptop. And everything else (in my opinion) is axillary Internet + TV / player + reader / gamer ... Fortunately, I don’t need such an “advanced” gadget! As for the rest, I'm sure: tablets are the future.
    Best regards, Georgiy.

An iPhone 3GS released in 2009 has the latest OS version. iPad 2 (2011) also. Which Android was supported for at least half of this period? Why does the user have to cut something? This should be the concern of the vendor. With regards to Windows RT and the “interest” of developers, many call it stillborn

    Denis Borisych

There is one good quote in the article
“But, ironically, the Z2760 made it almost pointless to buy Windows devices on ARM!”
    I would rephrase it
But, paradoxically, there is practically no point in Windows on ARM!

It's not at all clear to me why to do another nedos.
So they are like uncut dogs, and then there is also microsoftware with its own developments.
And if there is no way to drag all the software to this platform, then it makes no sense, because the main tsimes is that Vyn, no matter how they blame her, has a huge number of applications of any kind and orientation + the ability to write some things for her " on the knee."

    Anton

Vadim Sterkin: Anton, why would an ordinary user need to carry a tablet for repair, so that they can do it there new android for money?

Vadim, the android acquires new features faster with each version than any other mobile OS, it becomes faster and more custom. And the security of the system is improved.
IMHO, it's nonsense to buy the most clumsy Windows RT, which can do even less than the currently developed Firefox OS.

... and also the most expensive OS in terms of cost (both for vendors and for the end user (he also bears the burden of the OEM cost)

    Denis Borisych

    Vadim Sterkin,

Vadim, let's not engage in childishness, there is a huge layer of highly specialized software that exists only for Windows, a good example is restaurant and other systems.
Unfortunately, in our country the trend is such that it is easier to buy third-party (foreign) software and support it, not to mention the fact that most software for enterprises and laboratories of the "agroindustry" generally plows under dos and has no analogues.
I was engaged in “anonism” for 2 months, rewriting grain harvesting software for Windows, which, the devil knows how long, has been working under DOS and was written about 15 years ago. but now in the laboratory there is a normal computer with a normal OS (win7) and sane software, which normally works under all versions of Windows, except for AWP.

    AndrewTishkin

    I'm ok.

Vadim, maybe you have saved the picture in the cache?
I'm talking about the one that comes after the words "not only for the consumption of information."

And it's not just me - a check from the outside confirms the absence of the file. For example:
    http://www.bertal.ru/index.php?a764214/www.oszone.net/user_img/vadblog/windows-rt04.png#h

    Anton

Vadim Sterkin: Denis Borisych, I am aware of highly specialized software. Do you need grain harvesting software on your tablet? And why do you think that the OS for tablets does not have the right to life just because such software will not work on them?

Agree, Vadim, the tablet should be universal - the younger brother of the PC, but no longer a nephew. Previously, everyone bought tablets so as not to take a laptop on the road, but now, apart from engribirds, they don’t run anything on them. So, entertainment, and only ... From the same iPad it is impossible to upload anything to the network except through iTunes, and the android requires synchronization with a PC. It would be better to make a 10-hour battery for Windows 7 tablets or buy devices with Windows 8 Pro

    Anton

    Vadim Sterkin

Vadim, for the contact person, people have not yet invented anything better than Aiped (IMHO). Windows 8 RT is not finished yet. When Windows Blue RT comes out, and maybe even Windows 9 RT (if Microsoft does not abandon its plans), we'll talk there whether to buy or not.

    Dmitry

for me, the most important thing in a tablet is its integration with other devices I have, in particular, what this number of applications voted for. without applications and integration, a tablet, even with 8 cores, will be just a stove. and here it would seem that the MS could shoot with her mouth, but she stepped on the same rake as before with the zuna.

What for? You don't even need to be close. What I like about android is that it is a self-sufficient system. If you have direct hands and a correctly selected device, you can even sew custom firmware, watch, roll back to backup without connecting to a PC. I'm already silent about downloading any content in any convenient way, even movies via torrent, and installing any applications. Neither iOS nor WinRT have the above, they are tied to a PC and can do little without it.
In WinRT for some reason they made a desktop. Why is he on a tablet? On a desktop OS, tiles. Why are they there? Because of these misunderstandings, neither Win8 nor WinRT are normally sold.

The operating system has been ported entirely to ARM, which means that Windows RT has the desktop and all the applications that come standard with Windows.

But opposite the "Maximum number of SMB connections" WinRT is empty.

By the way, there is an android for x86 architecture. Thanks to virtual machine dalvik most of the software does not even require recompilation, it starts up like that, except for games and other software that uses the NDK.

    Vitaly K. ©

Vadim Sterkin: I still understand if the developer came and said - here, I lack a, b, c and d in WinRT, so I can’t implement e, f, g and h in my application.

Option - in RT there is no support for native applications without hacking the system, so you can’t just take and recompile to the ARM version.

Vadim Sterkin now Windows RT required.

What I don't know, I don't know. It is unlikely that the manufacturer encourages this, and it is unlikely that it is of high quality - the system is poorly distributed and not interesting to crackers.

Vadim, about Apple, don't confuse God's gift with scrambled eggs. Jobs's company does not seek to combine the concepts of Mac and iOS, on the contrary, the further, the stronger convergence is. Microsoft, on the other hand, is working hard to merge both the x86 and ARM ecosystems. Therefore, a number of geeks are tempted to port applications. Remove even the name Windows before the ARM product, remove the desktop, and everything will fall into place.
By the way, for me it is always a great mystery: will it start on a regular intel-corei5 Windows laptop XP x64 without emulator or not?

    Vitaly K. ©

Anton: By the way, it's always a great mystery for me: will Windows XP x64 without an emulator start on a regular intel-corei5 laptop or not?

It will start by itself, the problem is in the drivers for all sorts of pieces of iron such as WiFi. Switching hybrid graphics cards will not work at all, only the one built into the processor, or, at best, it will be possible to switch to using only an external one.

    Alexei

In my (and not only my) opinion, MS missed the Metro concept very badly. Just as this interface is meaningless on desktop PCs, RT is also meaningless on tablets.
What do we expect from windows? Of course, the ability to run our favorite application. What do we get? Only an office, a bare market and the illusion that we have a full-fledged Winda.
IMHO, Androyd for much less money will solve comparable tasks in comparable time

    Denis Borisych

    Vitaly K. ©,

It starts up and works, sometimes you need to change the Beavis.

    Denis Borisych

Vadim Sterkin: No one is outraged that macOS apps don't work on iOS and vice versa. But when it comes to Windows RT, the labels “under-sawn”, “under-sawn”, etc. immediately appear.
No, I understand that the consumer can get confused - he wanted Windows 8, but it turned out that something was missing there. But people commenting here are people updating Android themselves, recompiling XP x64, rewriting applications for cereals. But something is missing somewhere...

Yes, just those people who buy a tablet with Windows to get exactly “the same Windows”, and not its likeness, otherwise this is another technical castrato for a lot.

    Denis Borisych

    Vitaly K. ©,

With existing restrictions, users are also not interested.

    Denis Borisych

Vadim Sterkin: Vitaliy, it’s not because it’s “not finished”, but because that’s what they intended :)

That's exactly why when the small soft released the first tablet computer, there was no hype, and when they introduced the iPad, the world crap with joy.

    Denis Borisych

Vadim Sterkin: Anton, excuse me for not waiting, but already today I raised the question “To whom now Windows RT required.
And clichés like “underdone” are in favor of the poor. I still understand if the developer came and said - here, I lack a, b, c and d in WinRT, so I can’t implement e, f, g and h in my application. You get blah blah.

and from your point of view, it turns out “do not care what bullshit, but bmw” so what?
It's just that expectations are one thing, but in practice, as always, another ...

    Denis Borisych

Vadim Sterkin: Anton, the device should correspond to your range of tasks. If you need software for grain harvesting, buy a tablet with Windows 8. If the main thing for you is to be in contact, Windows RT is enough for you.

Vadim, everyone has their own range of tasks, you can’t please everyone, it’s just an option when another platform appears, instead of a proven and working Windows, and even shredded to the very worst, without the ability to run your favorite applications, also with the price of the issue like that of a “stub ' seems very doubtful to me.
I'll buy an android in such situations, and it's cheaper and more practical.

If I show you Windows phone(this is also an OS), the wait for these applications to run will be even higher - after all, this is Windows, why not? And now I'm showing you a Windows RT tablet. Note that this is not Windows 8, but you 100% expect this OS to run those same applications.

The problem is based on the lack of knowledge about the OS. Since the mass consumer does not have this knowledge, the problem is solved only by marketing. And here Microsoft has a problem.

Because most devices are OEMs, the company can't control their names to emphasize functional differences, as Apple does. What's more, even with its Surfaces, Microsoft made the mistake of deciding that the RT prefix was enough for customers to understand the difference.

Hence the negative perception. And so much so that you are ready to forget about your favorite software and buy Android :)

Denis Borisych: but from your point of view, it turns out “do not care what bullshit, but bmw” so what?

metro-holivare, and even here you can see it quite well, because the topic is related.

When arguing with me in the comments, people forget that I have already said all the most important things in the text of the entry. Someone does not even read it, and some draw conclusions from it that are directly opposite to those set out in the text. And this quote of yours is an excellent illustration of the last thesis :)

To make it clearer, here is a simple exercise. Re-read the entry from "Who needs Windows RT now" to the end. Now, based on this block, try to formulate the answer for me in one short thesis.

    sokrat

It seems that Windows RT, with such demand, will have to be abandoned as an unsuccessful project. Therefore, in 5 years, it is more likely that it will not become morally obsolete, but will be curtailed in general.
But perhaps Microsoft dreams of cross-platform (in terms of hardware) and therefore will persistently pull Windows RT further (they know better).
I have a tablet on a regular Windows 8, and the choice in its direction for only one reason - a minimum of movements when switching to a tablet. With Windows RT, you will again have to look for analogues, which differs little from changing the platform.

    Denis Borisych

    Vadim Sterkin: Denis Borisych,
your rhetoric is based entirely on the problem of misguided expectations. I'll exaggerate the examples below a bit to highlight it. If I show you a microwave, you'll know for sure that you can't run Windows applications on it. If I show you a tablet with Android or iOS, you will also know this, but somewhere a thought may flash - what if there is any kind of virtualization. But it doesn’t occur to you to call them under-axes and trimmings.

This is for the simple reason that between androids of all versions and ai-os there is almost complete cross-platform, which is expressed in the fact that software written for 1 iPad works on 4, and the difference between mobile version for phones and a version for tablets almost does not exist, in any case, interchangeability is almost complete, it all depends only on the amount of iron on board (it’s clear that a tablet without 3g cannot call like a phone)

If I show you a Windows Phone (it's also an OS), the expectation to run these applications will be even higher - it's still Windows, why not? And now I'm showing you a Windows RT tablet. Note that this is not Windows 8, but you 100% expect this OS to run those same applications. The problem is based on a lack of knowledge about the OS.

the problem is not here, the problem is the lack of banal compatibility between products of the same line of different versions, a good example of ms office, no one has such a leapfrog with versions

Since the mass consumer does not have this knowledge, the problem is solved only by marketing. And here Microsoft has a problem.
Because most devices are OEMs, the company can't control their names to emphasize functional differences, as Apple does. What's more, even with its Surfaces, Microsoft made the mistake of deciding that the RT set-top box was enough for customers to understand the difference. Hence the perception, which is very negative. And so much so that you are ready to forget about your favorite software and buy Android :)

then you don’t need to position it as windows 8 and that’s it, then there will be no expectations, just if special software doesn’t work under rt, then it doesn’t work under android, and under th-os too, but other things being equal, android is just cheaper easier and more functional.

And here is another interesting phenomenon that I observe in my blog. It manifested itself most clearly in the metro-holivar, and even here it is seen quite well, because the topic is related.

    Conclusion
Due to the marginal difference in size/weight and battery life between ARM and Clover Trail tablets, there is no consumer benefit to Windows RT devices (even assuming they are not more expensive). Few people need an Office 2013 RT tablet, the inability to run third-party desktop applications, on one side of the scale, and nothing to put on the other.

The situation may improve if Microsoft starts listening to the opinions of users, not effective managers. The only question is whether they need it.

Anton Additionally, I looked through various kinds of information, there are tests of the Pi Calculator program.
Of course, I am not a specialist in electronics and computer technology, but a user who has a certificate in the specialization "Computer in a modern office" ...
If it doesn’t bother you, at least briefly describe how long it can work without breakdowns HDD modern PC?
Thank you for the provided information. Alexander.

    Anton

Vadim Sterkin: Anton, I do not impose anything on anyone. So you'd better refrain from commenting in that tone.

wait and see, but I'm afraid that there will be no miracle

    Vadim Sterkin:
Meanwhile, as I said, MacOS software does not work on iOS and vice versa. Those. the situation is exactly the same.

I don’t respect bitten and sincerely consider tech castrato No. 1, I work on it only because I got it for almost a “freebie”.

    Vadim Sterkin:
And what a mess with versions of Office and what specific lack of compatibility do you mean? If you mean 2003 and DOCX, then this is not even serious.

doc-x is not even a problem it's such a feature
and what about the incompatibility of macros in different versions of the office, the worst thing in excel, when a document is edited in different offices, the document is totaled and can no longer be restored by any means, I wrote a letter to the ms support, but they didn’t really answer me, you can provide the files to Unfortunately, I can’t because these are documents for working with contractors (the funny thing is that these files are displayed absolutely correctly through dropbox from an iPhone). By the way, the problems with version compatibility do not end there.

    Vadim Sterkin:
Of course not. They seemed to be trying to fence themselves off (they called RT, not 8), but they really couldn’t convey the difference, which I wrote about in the comment above. And that's the reason why this post was made :)

    There are 2 errors here
    1) name the product in ms win-mobile / winOS or something like that, it would be positioned more correctly (precisely by fencing it off from the classic system)
    2) in your article that this is not Windows it is said almost at the very end of the article, to which many probably did not read, which again causes a certain perception problem and “righteous anger”.

    Vadim Sterkin:
Mmm... You rewrote the conclusion in your own words, but I wanted to understand how you see my answer to the question "Who needs Windows RT now" based on what I wrote. Let me remind you that the request was generated by your comment:

I see the answer something like this, nobody really needs this OS yet, but it will undoubtedly be of interest to many enthusiasts, and just curious people, of course, if it gets rid of a number of problems inherent in the original system.
In reality, it will become in demand if the MS unties it from the device and makes it possible to put it even on a vacuum cleaner, even on a refrigerator.

Hacker C. L. Rokr found a way to bypass the program signature verification mechanism when running in Windows RT. Thus it becomes possible installation and launching arbitrary desktop applications under Windows RT.

Windows RT is a special version of Windows 8 optimized for ARM processors. It is usually installed on tablets, including the branded Microsoft Surface. There is no Windows Media Player in the package, and the only desktop applications can only be those that come with the operating system: these are File Explorer, Internet Explorer and OfficeRT. Going forward, only apps built using the cross-platform Windows Runtime APIs can be installed on the device. Having received the appropriate digital signature, such an application can be installed on Windows RT. It is forbidden to port or run desktop applications on Windows RT from older versions of Windows.

The operating system performs signature verification on application startup. In his blog, the author writes that the exploit became possible due to the care with which Microsoft ported the operating system code from the x86 platform to the ARM platform. They have ported the code so precisely that even the relative memory address 0x19FFA6 has the same function here - to store a byte that matches the minimum code signature quality that is acceptable to run the application. The value “0” corresponds to the absence of a digital signature. The value "8" corresponds to a digital signature approved by Microsoft. The maximum value “12” is Windows system components.

On x86 computers, applications run with a minimum level of “0”, and under Windows RT they must have a signature quality value of at least “8”. This setting is stored directly in the kernel and cannot be changed. However, after the system loads it into memory, it can be changed directly in memory. The exploit author managed to inject the necessary code into memory through the CSRSS (Client/Server Runtime Subsystem) process, a component of the Windows kernel, using a debugger that modifies CSRSS data in memory. Thus, it was possible to load the code that changes the value of “8” to “0” at a known address.

Perhaps someone is using the work C. L. Rokr and release a simple utility that will do all the work without having to deal with the debugger. In any case, the jailbreak will need to be repeated after each OS startup. As is the case with mobile devices, this is called "tethered jailbreak".

The hacker is calling on Microsoft to remove the unnecessary "marketing" restriction on running Win32 applications on Windows RT, or at least let users decide for themselves which programs they can run. That is, make verification of digital signatures a disabled option.

Microsoft has managed to develop a version of the operating system for tablets called Windows RT. Thanks to it, users can feel all the conveniences of new items. This OS is great for touch devices. Anyone who wants to get this OS can buy windows 8, or rather one of its versions of Windows RT.

In this operating system, the user can place, sites, applications and contacts as he pleases. Windows RT allows you to extend the battery life of your device. Quick access to apps and mail, so you're always ready to go. Most Windows features RT is similar to Windows 8. There is one difference - in the first one you cannot use old applications. In the OS for tablets, users can see the new interface Modern (another name for Metro). You can see different tiles on the screen. These tiles may be updated from time to time. In order not to get lost in the new interface, it is advisable to study it.

Those who buy windows 8 will be able to see the updated interface. Windows RT also has the familiar “Desktop”. It lacks the Start button and a completely different color scheme. To launch it, you need to click on the tile with its image on the start screen.

With the help of the app store in this operating system, you can download new apps to your tablet. Only the store itself is a bit unfinished by the developers.

Windows RT natively comes with good set applications. They are able to make the user experience as efficient as possible. Among them are mail client mail, Internet browser Explorer, music player, Office 2013 Home & Student application suite.

Anyone who wants to own Windows versions RT, can purchase it in online stores along with tablets. It is also possible to buy windows 8.

If you look, Windows RT almost completely copies the components of Windows 8. The tablet version contains applications that can help a blind person work with the device. Although such applications are not fully developed. They allow you to perform only the most basic tasks and work only with simple applications.

This operating system is used on devices that have ARM processors. You can only buy Windows RT on installed tablets. Among them are ASUS VivoTab RT, Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11, Surface RT. With Windows RT, you can safely engage in work and play. Each device has its own unique characteristics. OS for tablets takes them all into account.

The new operating system is distributed in several dozen languages, including Russian. If the user wants to go somewhere, then there is no need to turn off the tablet. You can put it into sleep mode. As a result, less energy is used. You can get back to your business much faster. Now Windows RT is happily used on many tablets.

Saved and Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer). Full-fledged, with a ribbon interface "in the style of Windows 8".

Opening its main window (the former "My Computer"), the only section of the SSD drive appears. As you can see, the system occupies almost 20 GB. In the case of a tablet with 32 GB of memory, 14 GB will be free on the strength - the first buyers of the Surface RT have already complained about this.

Inside, everything is quite typical and made “under the mouse”, although the size of the icons can be increased.

The ribbon interface is moderately convenient, although no one has done its optimization “for fingers”.

Even the new file copy window migrated to Windows RT from the G8 in its purest form without changes. With all the technical details of the process and a beautiful schedule.

The saddest thing about Explorer is that so far it's the only one that's really convenient. file manager under Windows RT. There are a couple of managers for the Metro interface, but their functionality is so poor that even an inexperienced user will be dissatisfied. Especially if you have to work with external drives, such as flash drives or USB hard drives.

By the way, working with any USB drive is exactly the same as in regular Windows. On the one hand, nothing here is optimized for touch control, but on the other hand, neither iOS nor Android will offer you such simplicity out of the box. Memory cards and hard drives are recognized without problems. All work is carried out as in Windows 8. It may not be as convenient, but the functionality offered is undoubtedly much wider.

    multitasking

Perhaps multitasking is one of the greatest strengths of Windows RT. This is not surprising - it is obvious that by porting the Windows NT kernel to the ARM architecture, Microsoft did not change the basic functionality of the system. Therefore, there are no ingenious methods for calculating the "efficiency" of resource allocation, in which the application can be closed on Android, iOS and other less popular systems.

Preemptive multitasking in Windows RT is fully implemented, high quality and reliable. There are no differences from regular Windows. Yes, Metro apps run in full screen mode, but you can have as many windows as you like on a regular desktop. You can switch between programs with the usual combination.

All applications in this case are displayed in the usual way, as in Windows 8.

As an option on the left, you can call up a list of recent applications. Small previews of them are displayed, much like in Android 4.0 and later.

There is also a Metro Snap mode. It allows you to display two applications on the screen at once. In this context, the desktop and all windows on it logically work as a separate program. The screen in Snap mode is divided into two parts in a ratio of 1:4. The smaller one usually shows something like notifications, a compact version of the app. In fact, this is quite convenient and in general a good idea. You can watch Snap in action in Windows RT in our Windows 8 video:

There are no differences from the "eight" in Windows RT - the logic of work is exactly the same.

    Options

As we wrote above, a gesture in the form of moving a finger from any of the edges of the screen leads to the call of one or another context menu. If above or below, then application options appear, and if on the right, then the Charms bar.

The panel contains five icons: Search, Sharing, Start, Devices, and Settings. Search searches for applications and tablet files; general access provides data synchronization with online; Start brings up the start screen; Devices shows external devices connected to the system; and Options are some system-wide settings.

So from the parameters you can call the control panel (classic and new in the Metro style), information about the computer, view help. But more importantly, icons are displayed at the bottom of the panel for quick access to various computer settings.

From here you can "deal" with Wi-Fi, change the sound volume, screen brightness, see notifications and even turn off the computer! By the way, here there are messages about a possible overrun of traffic. If suddenly your device with Windows RT works via 3G with the Internet, then you can set a plan for the consumption of available traffic.

    Windows RT for administrators

We believe that Microsoft did not intend to position Windows RT in this way at all. Her Surface Pro tablet makes it clear which devices are aimed at professional use - those on which Windows 8 is installed. It is better suited for these purposes, if only because it runs any Windows applications.

However, Windows RT did not remove the standard programs that are present in the "regular" operating systems from Microsoft for x86 processors. For example, Task Manager.

It is completely similar to what is in Windows 8. Recall that in the G8 it was significantly altered, resulting in a noticeably more visual and easy-to-use application.

List Items running processes have become noticeably larger, but still not very convenient for touch control. Windows RT could use a separate, simpler and more intuitive Metro-style app manager.

Resource Monitor is a great utility, which is also mostly appreciated by administrators. The only pity is that there is not much to control in it - there are still very few applications for Windows RT.

Standard utilities for working with drives have not disappeared anywhere. Here we see windows, the design of some of which has not changed dramatically since Windows 95.

Even the calculator is there. The usual one, which is also in Windows 7. Moreover, it is convenient to use it even with your fingers - the buttons on it are quite large. The only pity is that the menu is small.

But, of course, the most "administrative" program is command line. It is present here in full measure and without restrictions.

Don't forget about protecting your computer. Windows Defender is also available in Windows RT.

I must say that the presence of all these utilities can not be called a minus. However, they are sometimes needed by ordinary users. And this is where the problems begin. Working with them with your fingers is inconvenient - their interface has not been altered at all and is suitable for working with a mouse and keyboard. There are no analogues in the Metro environment. Even from third parties. They will probably appear, but this process will take some time anyway.

Windows RT may well get rid of the annoying label of a "defective" version of Windows. 7Zip, Far Manager, Miranda IM, Notepad++, Quake 2 and many other popular "desktop" applications can already be installed on RT tablets in desktop mode. If you have a Windows RT tablet and you want to expand its functionality, then this post is for you.

The developers at XDA Developers do a great job every day. One of their activities is the supply popular programs"unpopular" Windows RT. There will be a special post on the XDA Developers forum that collects information about all recompiled and non-recompiled applications running on Windows RT with Jailbreak. The vast majority of applications are fully functional; if there are still errors, this is reported separately.

What kind of programs and games can I get for Windows RT if I jailbreak Windows RT (see instructions below)?

    Recompiled (reworked) applications:
